The Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer would have entered their fifth model year in 2026, accompanied by a refresh. However, Jeep celebrated the occasion by dropping the most popular model of the two. From 2022 through 2025, edits to all Wagoneers were limited largely to engine choice. At launch in 2022, the Wagoneer and Wagoneer L were powered by a 5.7-liter Hemi eTorque V8. Good for 392 horsepower and 404 lb-ft of torque, the engine used a small 48-volt electric motor in place of the traditional alternator. The motor generated power that went to a lithium-ion battery under the seats. Overall power didn't increase, but fuel economy did.rare rides icons the jeep wagoneer the first luxury suv ever part xviiiFor 2022 Grand Wagoneer and L models, the base engine was the larger 6.4-liter Hemi V8 that made 471 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque sans hybrid. The 2022 Grand Wagoneer also had a turbocharged engine choice not offered on the more basic Wagoneer: The 3.0-liter twin-turbo Hurricane inline-six. It managed 510 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque, and it was the most powerful engine on offer at the time.AdvertisementAdvertisementIn 2023, a lower boost version of the Hurricane was added to the base Wagoneer, and made 420 hp and 468 lb-ft of torque. In that model year only, the inline-six was offered alongside the V8. There were no changes for Grand Wagoneer for 2023.The following year in 2024, the Wagoneer was powered solely by the Hurricane inline-six with 420 hp as the 5.4-liter V8 was dropped from the lineup. The 6.4-liter V8 was also dropped from the Grand Wagoneer, leaving only the 510-horse I-6.rare rides icons the jeep wagoneer the first luxury suv ever part xviiiIn 2025, a new Hurricane version was introduced and limited to the Grand Wagoneer. It upped the power to 540 horses and 521 lb-ft of torque. Changes were not made to the Wagoneer's power, for reasons which became clear by the end of that year.It was announced in 2025 the Wagoneer would bow out, and Grand Wagoneer would move forward alone in 2026 with refreshed looks. An interesting product decision upon review of sales data. Since inception, the Wagoneer outsold the Grand Wagoneer about 3:1. Overall sales were more sluggish than expected, with about 56,000 total examples sold in its first year.AdvertisementAdvertisementThat figure dropped to about 40,000 in 2023, and then rebounded to 54,000 in 2024. But in all cases, the Wagoneer sold three times as many vehicles as the Grand Wagoneer. One might have assumed a pricing jump was forthcoming, in accordance with the more prestigious model being the only on offer.rare rides icons the jeep wagoneer the first luxury suv ever part xviiiBut things went the opposite position, perhaps in an attempt to boost value proposition and sales. In 2025, a new Wagoneer asked between $62,000 and $82,000, while a Grand Wagoneer was $87,000 to $111,600. For 2026, the base Grand Wagoneer asked $66,790 and topped out at $103,600.One could look at that both ways: It's cheaper than before to get into a Grand Wagoneer, but content has also been cut accordingly. The base Grand Wagoneer now has lower quality leather than the other versions, and is also rear-drive with 4x4 optional. The panoramic roof is an optional extra until you get to Limited Reserve trim. Leather color options are slimmed across the line even at top "Summit Reserve" trim, where black, beige (Tupelo), and Ruby Red are the only colors that remain. The stone and blue options were eliminated somewhere along the line for the top Grand Wagoneer trim.rare rides icons the jeep wagoneer the first luxury suv ever part xviiiThe 2026 Grand Wagoneer refresh made a notable difference on the exterior, particularly at the front end. The headlamps were slimmed, with more detailing added to the running lamps. Headlamps now extended into a full-width light bar across the top of the grille, mimicking what was promised by the concept back in 2020.AdvertisementAdvertisementOf particular noteworthiness: Wagoneer branding was removed from the front end for 2026, with simple Jeep block lettered logo in its place. There were apparently plans to create a whole Wagoneer sub-line at Jeep, but slow sales put an end to that dream.rare rides icons the jeep wagoneer the first luxury suv ever part xviiiThe seven-slot grille was shortened in vertical height, with additional accent lighting atop each of the vertical segments that formed triangular shapes. The glow from the LEDs highlighted the segments below with a waterfall effect. The bumper was brought up even higher with the smaller grille, with new crisp edges at either side for a tougher overall look.Driving lamps and fog lamps became vertical instead of horizontal, with their accompanying chrome reworked. Sensors for active cruise and parking became more visible, and highlighted by a larger lower valence opening. The chrome undertray of the old model was removed, replaced with black plastic. The overall front end look was more modern, but also less upscale.Along the sides, the chrome sill trim below the doors became thinner in 2026. Around the exterior most trim that was previously chrome was switched to silver metallic. But much of the trim that was previously chrome became black, most notably around all windows. Obsidian-level trims returned for 2026, but now edited only the color of the trim that ran along the top of the windows.rare rides icons the jeep wagoneer the first luxury suv ever part xviiiAt the rear were two notable changes. Large block lettering for the model name that used to span the width of the tailgate was removed, and replaced with Jeep. A red light bar was also added between the taillamps, another adjustment similar to the concept vehicle. Around the time Jeep decided there was not going to be a Wagoneer sub-brand, they introduced another Jeep Wagoneer. rare rides icons the jeep wagoneer the first luxury suv ever part xviiiThis one was more perplexing, and did not share much of anything with the regular Wagoneer or Grand Wagoneer. It was also fully electric. And as of this writing, Jeep seems unsure about the model's future. We'll get into the latest chapter of Wagoneer next time.[Images: Stellantis]Become a TTAC insider.
