This time, the brand is taking inspiration from the first-ever civilian Jeep, the Willys CJ-2A. The original CJ-2A was released in July 1945, based on the Willys MB that the U.S. military used during World War II. The modified military vehicle soon found a home in farming and ranching environments.JeepToday's Wranglers carry a similar capable spirit, albeit they're notably cushier than the first post-war iteration. They've also expanded beyond the farming and ranching bubble, with Jeep selling over 5 million Wranglers across more than 80 years. Now, the 2027 Jeep Wrangler JL-2A takes iconic imagery from the original and blends it with the current Wrangler's creature comforts.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe inaugural CJ-2As rolled out in either a warm tan or olive green color, and they were the first to feature the now-iconic seven-slot grille. The new JL-2A follows a similar formula, with the two-door variant painted Gobi, Jeep's current tan color, and the four-door donning '41, an olive green shade. Gobi and '41 are the obvious picks for the themed release, but both of the JL-2A's body styles can also come in Bright White, Sting Gray, Ghost, and Joose for a more modern look.JeepRegardless of the paint job, JL-2A models wear 17-inch retro-style wheels wrapped in standard 33-inch-tall BFGoodrich KO2 All-Terrain tires. The bright-orange wheels are an unmistakable ode to the Sunset Red ones available on the original CJ-2A. Orange tow hooks bring the pop of color into elements of the front and rear bodywork. Dark Metallic Grey accents add emphasis to the grille, and the roof and fender flares match the body color to form a more cohesive appearance.Inside, orange stitching and special-edition details pair with a Nappa Heritage Tan and Bison Brown interior that represents a contemporary version of the CJ-2A's classic tan seats. The air vents feature a seven-slot grille icon and a Willys silhouette, while the shifter gets a Willys-Overland medallion on the top. The rear swing gate hides a plaque showing farm and factory settings, paying homage to Jeep's entry into civilian vehicle production.Based on the Wrangler Rubicon, the JL-2A offers either a 285-hp 3.6-liter V-6 or a 270-hp 2.0-liter turbo four. Those engines can pair with a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission. The JL-2A also features electronic locking front and rear diffs, an electronic anti-roll-bar disconnect, and a 4.10 rear-axle ratio. Four-wheel drive is standard. The Convenience package comes standard too, along with a front TrailCam and integrated washer.AdvertisementAdvertisementJeep says the JL-2A package will cost $4,995, just $115 more than a similarly equipped Rubicon. This year's Rubicon starts at $47,810, and no major pricing changes are expected for 2027 models, so the Wrangler JL-2A will likely start around $53,000. Orders will open in October.➡️ Skip the lot.
