If you're in North America, you might know the MG brand for its small sports cars like the MGB. They even made a car called the Midget, big enough to almost fit in your back pocket. If you're European, you might know the name for its old sports cars and a long line of affordable family cars. Either way, you're probably going to get a shock from the latest MG. It's a seven-seat SUV with a PHEV system and a startlingly low MSRP. MG Goes Maximum MG The MG S9 isn't the first SUV from MG, but it is its first three-row model. It's also not really an MG, though if you follow the brand you probably knew that already.MG is launching the SUV in Europe, but it's already on sale in other markets including China. There, it's called the Roewe RX9, and it went on sale in 2023. That model uses a 2.0-liter turbo-four, but this PHEV variant will be powered by something different.MG It uses a 1.5-liter turbo-four, and it will have a 24.7 kWh battery pack delivering an estimated 62-mile WLTP range. MG didn't give any more specifics about the engine or the motors, and a lack of information is a common thread for this vehicle that's meant to hit dealers in Europe this month.Other things the company will say include 36 cubic feet of cargo space. That's with the third row folded, and since it's a European measure, we believe it only counts space below the rear glass. With the seats full, there is 11.7 cubic feet of cargo space. The figures put it well ahead of the 6.3 cubic feet Kia advertises for the Sorento PHEV in the EU with all the seats up and 30 with the rear seats down, for reference.MG says the new SUV will come loaded. Fake leather and a big sunroof are standard, with heated, ventilated, and massage seats all available. Dual 12.3-inch screens in a bezel that looks suspiciously like one from a Kia are also standard. Sticker Price Thousands Less Than Competitors MG The biggest shock might be the price. It will come with a UK price range from £34,205 to £36,945. That equates to a starting price of $46,000, and while UK prices include sales tax, dollar amounts between the UK and US aren't directly comparable due to other fees involved. What is comparable is how the price stacks up against models sold in the US and the UK. Like that Sorento PHEV, for example. It's a $48,000 car in the US, but in the UK it starts at £47,455. That's £13,250, or $17,800, more than the MG. If we use that as a basis for comparison, this might be a $30,000 three-row SUV if it were sold in the States. If you haven't been following MG, that's probably because it went out of business in 2005. But China's SAIC saw value in the brand and snapped up the marque, which was founded in 1924 as Morris Garages.Since then, SAIC has grown the brand to be larger than it ever was in the UK. Last year, the brand sold more than 700,000 vehicles, with the majority of those sold in Europe. Today it sells a full range of vehicles, from subcompact cars to this new seven-seat SUV. It even has a sports car, the Cyberster, which makes up to 536 horsepower from a pair of electric motors.Source: MG
