Corliss OglesbyThis full-size 3-row SUV is touted as perfect for families. And while they might appreciate the spacious cabin and thoughtful features, we discovered why drivers with tall passengers of any age will appreciate it.In planning for my test drive of the 2026 VW Atlas, I had one loaded question in mind: does one person living in a city need a rugged family SUV? The logical answer is no. My week with the Atlas defied logic. I managed to fill the 2026 Volkswagen Atlas Peak Edition, a mid-size 3-row SUV and the largest vehicle in the entire Volkswagen lineup, with friends and their kids. I found time to stretch out and relax. And the trim I tested, the Peak Edition, came in Avocado Green Pearl, a color that proved to be a striking against the Chicago skyline and city streets.AdvertisementAdvertisementThis story is 100% human-researched and written based on actual first-person knowledge, extensive experience and expertise on the subject of cars and trucks. What the VW Atlas CostsThe 2026 VW AtlasThe VW Atlas is powered by a 4-cylinder turbo engine that generates 269 HP. With this being the largest vehicle in the Volkswagen line-up, I expected it to feel like it, but despite the size it was nimble. The Avocado Green Pearl is a rare and striking color that stands out on the road. Combined with the illuminated light bar, the glowing Volkswagen logo, the headlights and taillights, and the dark rims, the Atlas Peak Edition has a strong and distinctive presence especially when it's lit up. The color brought back beautiful memories of the car my grandmother purchased when I was just 15. The standout exterior feature is the illuminated light bar above the front grille, which sits on top of the illuminated Volkswagen logo. This light bar runs horizontally all the way across the front of the car from the right headlight to the left headlight. It is striking and gives the car a strong presence. Both the headlights and taillights are LED. The Atlas Peak Edition also comes with 18-inch black rims.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe Peak Edition interior features black leatherette with gray and orange contrast stitching throughout, matching the Peak Edition logo colors. The seats are quilted and the orange stitching carries through to the headrests and door panel accents. The stainless steel pedal caps are another detail exclusive to the Peak Edition. The interior ambient lighting system offers 30 ambient lighting color choices, 30 reasons to drive at night. Night driving on Lower Wacker Drive, the effect was beautiful just as it was when I had the Volkswagen Golf. The doors, the dash, the center console, and even the space in front of the passenger seat all illuminate with the color of your choice. The passenger side display goes a step further, glowing 'Peak Edition.' The push-to-start button is located in the center console rather than next to the steering wheel. The steering wheel is packed with controls including volume control, cruise control, distance control, speed adjustment, travel assist, voice control system, digital cockpit menu navigation, and the heated steering wheel control. I find it easier to navigate most of these functions from the infotainment system. Read: I Want the 2024 Honda Pilot Trailsport. With a family of four, they can carpool neighborhood kids and host visiting family without ever running out of room. Even with two car seats occupying the second row, the middle seat is open for an additional passenger.AdvertisementAdvertisementFrom my experience, Volkswagen has been consistent with offering generous legroom, the Atlas was no different. I had tall passengers try out the second and third rows while the driver's seat was fully pushed back. A 6'5 passenger in the middle row and a 5'11 passenger directly behind them in the third row sat comfortably, with the third row having just enough legroom. The Atlas passes the tall person check. One thing that caught me off guard with seating was when I sat in the front passenger seat and discovered it was manually adjustable. If power seating is important to you (or your passenger), the SEL and R-Line Premium come with a power adjustable front passenger seat. As a Floridian, there is nothing like the natural sunlight beaming down on the perfect 'summer' day. At night, driving through the city streets was a sight to see, the panoramic sunroof made way for a worm's eye view of the city lights and skyscrapers. The power tilting and sliding panoramic sunroof come standard on the Peak Edition, SEL, and Premium R-Line trims. A sunroof can be added to the SE with Technology Package for $1,200.AdvertisementAdvertisementEven though this car is meant for light off-roading, living in a city made me think carefully about how it performs in that environment. The size, the gas consumption, how it navigates, and whether it is a good fit for someone who lives in the city but has an adventurous spirit and finds the rugged look appealing were all things I considered. This car seems to be the happy medium. It leans adventurous while still offering the elevated, refined quality that Volkswagen is known for. It is the best of both worlds. One line says, 'We go together like brand new shoes.' It was the right song, at the right time, in the right car. Logically, this car is for someone with a big family, a growing family, pets or tall passengers. Volkswagen even promotes the Atlas as the "Family SUV." I agree, but if you do not fit in that category, you don't have to rule it out. The Atlas makes a strong case for itself regardless of your family size.
