Keeping UpJust a month ago, we wrote about how Mazda plans to rework its big SUV lineup to rebound from sluggish sales. Currently, U.S. sales have exposed the Japanese automaker's flaws against most of its competition. This gave Mazda reason to go back to the drawing board and announce it will introduce 'unprecedented' (said the CEO) changes to the large CX SUV lineup.Reports and speculation now suggest these changes won't come soon, but other markets are getting small upgrades in the meantime.MazdaEuropean UpgradesIn a report, Japanese publication Creative Trend detailed that while Mazda toils away at the big changes, Europe just got refreshed versions of the CX-60 and CX-80. New for the European market is the dark chrome treatment for the exterior logos, emblems, and other details. The CX-80 switches to black roof rails, and both models add new color options. The tan interior option is now also available for the 3-row 7-seater variants. The more attention-grabbing changes include improved ride comfort from reworked rear suspension crossmember bushings. Noise levels also dropped with added sound-suppression materials in the engine compartment and interior. Lastly, European models will get the Active Parking Control Feature, which will allow the car to find parking spaces and self-park in both perpendicular and parallel parking situations.2025-2026 Mazda CX-70 in Melting Copper MetallicMazdaThe Unprecedented ChangesThe updates for the European market likely also indicated that the major changes promised by the brand will take time, with more minor updates set to launch sometime in 2027 before the bigger changes in 2028. In a recent interview with Chugoku Shimbun, Mazda offered insight into the unprecedented changes it announced a month ago. The Japanese automaker said it is planning significant changes to the exterior, interior, and powertrain for its major CX SUVs. The biggest upgrade in that statement appears to be the engine; the CX models will likely eventually get the new Mazda SKYACTIV-Z hybrid powertrain, which is still under development. The first car set to receive the new engine is the next-generation Mazda CX-5, which will debut late in 2027, giving more credence to the CX SUV updates being released sometime in 2028.2026 Mazda CX-5Jared Rosenholtz/Autoblog
