2027 BMW iX4 Ushers the SUV Coupe into the EV EraBMWThe 2027 BMW iX4 is faithful to the spirit of the X4 and brings the sloped-roof SUV design into the world of EVs.The iX4 will come in 50 xDrive and M60 xDrive trims, with the latter generating a combined 603 horsepower and 645 pound-feet of torque. The iX4 will start at $67,695 when it goes on sale in March 2027. The 50 xDrive will be the first to arrive, with the M60 xDrive following later. If there's one thing that can be said of BMW in the past few decades, it's that the brand doesn't shy away from a controversial design. Anyone remember the launch of the G80 M3? The style impressions weren't exactly glowing. The builder of the "Ultimate Driving Machine" has done it once again with the reveal of the 2027 iX4, the electric sloped-roof version of the recently launched iX3.BMWReally, the iX4 is the electric successor to the now-discontinued X4. It joins the iX3—which, if you haven't heard, just added a sportier trim—in offering a base 50 xDrive variant and a more powerful M60 xDrive trim. Both versions come with an electric motor at each axle, with the motors on the former combining to produce 463 horsepower and 475 pound-feet of torque. The M60 version is considerably more potent, generating a combined 603 horsepower and 645 pound-feet of torque.BMW reports that the base model can launch to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds and has an electronically limited top speed of 130 mph. In its sportier guise, the iX4 is rated to sprint from zero to 62 mph in 3.9 seconds and on to a governed speed of 149 mph. We asked BMW about the discrepancy in acceleration tests and were told that because the M60 is further out, the automaker doesn't have a finalized zero-to-60 time yet.Quick ChargingBMW claims the 50 xDrive's 112-kWh battery is good for up to 428 miles of range based on the EPA's testing procedures. The M60 shares the same battery, but we're still waiting for an official range figure, though we expect the more powerful variant to be less thrifty with electrons. Thanks to an 800-volt electrical architecture, both models can charge at up to 400 kW, which can add as much as 184 miles of range in 10 minutes; charging from 10 to 80 percent is said to take about 21 minutes.Sporting DesignThe automaker intends the sloped roof, long wheelbase, and short overhangs to split the difference between an athletic stance and a stately design. The front of the iX4 looks effectively identical to the square-backed iX3, while the roofline takes on the same aggressive slope as the gas-burning X4.HondaCustomers who opt for either trim will be met with appropriately flashy interior trappings similar to those found in BMW's other Neue Klasse models. That means the same optional 3-D head-up display, the same 17.9-inch center touchscreen, and the same 43.0-inch windshield display found on the iX3. To make it feel a bit sportier, the M60 comes with a dedicated M Sport steering wheel with a red marker at 12 o'clock, colored stitching, shift paddles, and extra buttons for Boost mode and M mode.Pricing and ArrivalAs with other coupelike SUVs, the iX4 comes at a premium over its square-backed sibling. The 50 xDrive will start at $67,695 when it goes on sale in March 2027, which is $4845 above the cost of the equivalent iX3. We're still waiting on pricing for the sportier M60, though we'd wager that model will come in closer to the $90,000 mark.➡️ Skip the lot.
