Getting a tire repaired can be costly and usually comes at a time when you least expect it. This unexpected expense can cause stress and worry when finances are tight. Well, a Mississippi mechanic decides to go above and beyond when a good dude who is going through it comes into the shop needing a tire patch. In the TikTok, Collins (@shittytire) reveals how the customer got his tire paid for by another customer and how the stars aligned to make this possible. As of this writing, the TikTok has generated over 218,700 views. "It’s been paid, but this one is a crazy one. Dude comes in needing a flat fixed. His tire ain't worth a crap. He’s a good dude, good customer going through a hard time," Collins begins. The mechanic showcases the tire's condition, and it's very rundown with minimal tread left. While the customer just asked for a patch job to repair the tire, the mechanic did something else. "While I’m taking his tire off, I’m like ‘I’m gonna put a new tire on for him,’" Collins shares. Well, turns out, a random moment of kindness takes place. "Some random dude from not even from Batesville walks up and hands me money. ‘Hey, I wanna pay for a couple of tires for somebody that needs it because I’ve been seeing your videos,’" Collins reveals. Tell us what you think! View Comments Now that the tire replacement is funded by a random customer, Collins checks what inventory is available. By chance, he had a woman buy two tires and never claimed them. Well, those two tires are exactly the tires needed for the replacement. "So we put two tires on for him," Collins shares. In addition to the two new tires, the mechanic sanded down a corroded rim. "He’s not going to pay a penny, and it’s all because you all like, share, comment, and watch my videos. I appreciate you. I’m actually getting a little emotional because it’s crazy," he concludes. High Praise From Viewers Collins' desire to help those going through it has earned the trust and approval of many viewers. "Type of stuff TikTok is meant to be for," one TikTok commenter shared. "That’s amazing," another commented. "I'm driving up to Arkansas from Florida soon and I wanna stop by to make a donation and I wanna buy a t-shirt if you have em lol," a third added. How Is The Mechanic Able To Cover The Car Maintenance Costs? Car maintenance can be pricey when you get service at the dealership. One woman was quoted $19,000 for repairs, but she was able to make them herself for $500. So, Collins being able to help this customer out for free is commendable. In a recent interview with Motor1, Collins shares how he is able to cover the costs of car maintenance through his social media presence. Collins told Motor1, "I'm mostly using money I make from social media to cover the cost. Some people stop by the shop and drop money off, but it mostly comes from my earnings on social media." Collins believes social media has played a major role in his business. "Social media has impacted my business in a positive way. I have people wanting to donate money all the time, but I don't want to accept money like that. It seems like it could turn into a headache and problem. I just enjoy helping people that need it. ... It's good for the soul. Most people are living paycheck to paycheck, and vehicle repairs can be extremely expensive and inconvenient, so I just try to help out when I can. The issue is that I can't help everyone because then I wouldn't be able to stay in business." Considering some mechanics have tried to charge over $1,000 for four new tires, we asked Collins what his thoughts were about mechanics overcharging. "I don't really have a comment on mechanics overcharging because vehicles are becoming harder and harder to work on & diagnose. Tools are more expensive than ever, and it's hard to find knowledgeable mechanics," he shares. Motor1 asked how readers can support Collins’ mission by helping cover car maintenance for those in need. "Just watch, comment, like, and share my videos. My long-term goal and vision is to be able to fix people's vehicles for free or at a very low cost and supplement that loss of income with the income I make off of social media," Collins concludes. How Often Should You Change Out Your Tires? Generally speaking, tires should be replaced at least every six years, NerdWallet reports. In most cases, tires can last around 50,000 miles, and it is best to replace all four at the same time, Kelley Blue Book shares. Now, there are various factors that can affect when new tires are needed. When tires get thin or have damaged sidewalls, they become dangerous to drive on. Tires are impacted by miles driven, time, environment, and temperature, as all degrade the rubber. Tire tread is used to measure the health of the tires. The minimum legal limit of 2/32" tread depth is required in most states. Having tires with tread below 2/32" increases the chance of flat tires, blowouts, or the tire coming off entirely. Driving with 2/32" tread is simply unsafe for anyone on the roads, as worn-down tires have a harder time stopping the vehicle. Now, if you ever see tire cords appearing on your tires, they need to be replaced immediately. Though there is no way to prevent tires from degrading, steps can be taken to help preserve their lifespan. This includes tire rotations and properly filling tires to the correct PSI. To check on your tires, the penny test can be done to see how the tire depth is holding up. To do this, grab a penny and insert it upside down into the tread. When inserted, if you see the full head of Abraham Lincoln, it needs to be replaced. If any part of the head is covered, the tire is still okay to be driven on. We want your opinion!
