One of the most frustrating experiences in working life is when a colleague keeps pestering you about when you’ll be done with a task. A service tech has gone viral with a joke about being “haunted” by a service advisor who keeps inquiring about the status of a car. The lighthearted post highlights what can be very real tension between the service and tech departments.

Waiting around for your car to be serviced can be irritating for the customer. Sitting in the lobby of the service center can feel like an eternity. Options are limited as your car is being serviced and there may be nothing nearby to do to pass the time.

In this situation, customers may get inpatient and start bugging the advisor about when the car will be ready. The advisor then has to inquire about the status with the tech, which can be annoying as they are just trying to focus on their jobs.

How Much Longer Will This Take?

In the Facebook Reel, the dealership pokes fun at the dynamic between a service tech and advisor.

The skit begins in the shop, where the service advisor struts in and finds the tech.

“Here’s those Ram keys,” the advisor says as they pass the keys off.

“Thanks,” the tech replies. 

The tech goes back to working on the car. Then he hears a voice.

“How much longer, tag 359?” it asks in a haunting tone.

“Did you say something?” the tech replies, looking around. However, the advisor is nowhere to be seen.

“That was weird,” the tech says to himself. 

The tech again gets back to work. As he goes about his day, the voice interrupts the quiet.

“How much longer, tag 359,” it asks while the tech walks through the shop. 

In the breakroom, it inquires again, “How much longer, tag 359?”

Eventually, the tech snaps. He’s seen in the back of a truck with his hands over his ears as the voice repeats over and over, “How much longer, tag 359?”

“Long enough. Longer if you keep asking,” one wrote.

“Sooner if you don’t watch,” a second replied. 

“Well, let me ask you a couple of questions, Mr. Advisor. Is it up front yet? Do you have the keys? Do you have the RO? Then it must not be done yet! Back to your hole,” another added. 

“All it takes is 1 broken bolt or something to go sour to have the car tied up there for another week or even longer,” threatened a fourth commenter.

Some did suggest that, while getting continuously asked about the status of a work done can be challenging, the advisor is stuck between the customer and internal maintenance team. Definitely a tricky dynamic to balance. 

“Just doing my rounds,” one commenter shared.

What Causes Dealership Service Delays?

According to Chapel Hill Tire, here are the four reasons why service gets delayed at dealerships. 

  1. Car Part Shortages: Dealerships will often use brand-name parts from the manufacturer as a way to increase profits. If the part isn’t in the inventory, there is nothing that can be done until it gets restocked. 
  2. Staffing Shortages: Without a full staff, it’s difficult to complete timely maintenance.
  3. Car Sale Priorities: Dealerships get hurt financially when car service is being done. Typically, discounted services are pitched to incentivize the buyer to go with that dealership. However, this impacts the bottom line for the dealership as they want to focus on getting more sales.
  4. Loaner Car and Used Car Shortages: Dealerships are expected to offer a loaner when servicing your car for an extended period of time. However, there’s been a shortage of used cars in recent years. Dealerships will focus on fixing up trade-ins and loaner cars for sales instead of customer appointments.
