PLUS is expecting a traffic surge to 2.3 million vehicles a day on peak days for the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri holidays. The peak period is from March 18-20 for the annual balik kampung exodus and March 27-29 for the return trip to Klang Valley. The projected figure is 21% higher than traffic on a regular day and is in-line with the traffic surge during the recent Chinese New Year holiday season, where traffic on peak days surpassed two million vehicles. “PLUS is taking three approaches to face the traffic surge on its highways for Hari Raya Aidilfitri, which is more efficient traffic and incident management, optimum traffic dispersal and the comfort of users to ensure a safer and more comfortable journey,” said PLUS MD Datuk Nik Airina Nik Jaffar. The North South Highway concessionaire is again urging the public to plan their journey based on the MyPLUS-TTA digital travel timetable, which takes into account the travel pattern and analysis based on previous festival traffic surges. MyPLUS-TTA can be accessed on the PLUS app for the North South Highway and LPT2 from March 18-30. PLUS is also activating 34 SmartLane stretches at strategic locations, including two new stretches that weren’t in place for CNY. Activation depends on the current traffic situation and you’ll know a SmartLane is active when the green light is flashing. PLUS reminds users to not abuse the use of emergency lanes outside of active SmartLane periods. For those travelling south, PLUS will open three kilometres of the road widening project in Johor from March 18 to April 5. This will make it three lanes from Simpang Renggam to Sedenak (KM45.1 to KM42.5) southbound. The highway operator says that it will ensure that there’s no lane closure during the holiday season, including at the Johor lane widening project area. Exceptions include critical repairs, emergencies and accident vehicle removal. PLUS says that overall, over 6,000 people serving in the highway ecosystem will be mobilised to ensure that operations and maintenance goes smoothly. There will be more PLUSRonda dan LPT2Ronda teams on-duty 24 hours a day, and emergency response teams will be on standby at nine locations to deal with situations faster. As for user comfort, PLUS says that it has continuously upgraded facilities at over 60 locations, including R&Rs, rest stops and toll plazas. A total of 25 cabin toilets will be placed at selected toll plazas and rest stops over the holiday season. Note that the toilets and surau at toll plazas can also be used – this might be a better bet than crowded R&Rs. Other improvements include phased lighting upgrades to LEDs and 100 emergency bays at strategic locations. Make sure your vehicle is in good condition before setting off and remember that PDRM’s Op Selamat 26 will have its eyes on road users during the Raya holiday season. Drive safe.
