'I Got New Tires That I Didn't Want': Woman Goes to Discount Tire. Then the Workers Realize She's a Costco Member

There’s almost nothing better than finding out you can skip a fee you thought was unavoidable.

That’s what happened to one customer who learned at Discount Tire that simply mentioning a Costco membership could save them the cost of installation.

It’s a reminder that it never hurts to ask about price or service matching.

How to Get a Free Install at Discount Tire

In a viral video with more than 1.5 million views, content creator @pieandprayer reveals how a Costco membership could save you money at Discount Tire.

@pieandprayer says she overheard a salesperson offering another couple to match Costco’s free install when they hesitated to buy tires.

“When the other couple was reluctant to get tires right then he goes, ‘Well what are you thinking about doing, you’re going to Costco?’ And she’s like, ‘I don’t know, maybe.’ He goes, ‘We will waive the installation fee. We will match that,’” @pieandprayer recalls.

The couple ultimately didn’t purchase tires, but the information helped @pieandprayer save money.

“So I got up there, I said I heard what you said to the other couple, and I have a Costco card. So I pulled it out and he goes, ‘Alright,’ and waived the price of installation,” she says.

Discount Tire typically charges installation fees per tire, so the waived cost “saved a lot of money,” @pieandprayer says.

Motor1 did not find mention of this policy on Discount Tire’s website, but they do have a policy to match or beat a competitor’s price.

The company says it will honor lower advertised prices from authorized retailers as long as installation and shipping costs are included. Customers can request a match online using the “Found it Lower?” tool or bring proof to a local store.

How Much Does Installing a Tire Cost?

Getting new tires doesn’t just mean paying for the tires themselves—you also have to pay to get them mounted on your wheels. This usually costs $15 to $50 per tire, and the price can add up fast if you’re replacing all four, Henise Tire reported.

The exact cost depends on the type of tire and the shop you go to. Bigger tires, run-flat tires, or custom wheels can be more expensive. Shops may also charge extra for things like replacing valve stems, disposing of old tires, or adjusting your tire pressure monitoring system.

You’ll typically have two options: taking your car to a shop (in-store mounting) or paying extra to have a technician come to you (mobile mounting).

If you’re trying to save money, it helps to compare prices at different shops and ask about extra fees. Taking care of your tires—rotating them, keeping the right air pressure, and fixing problems quickly—can also make them last longer and cut down on costs over time.

Costo Versus Discount Tire

“Forget everything else said, Discount price matches. For whatever it is,” a top comment reads (this is true according to their listed policy).

“Just buy from Costco. They do free rotations. Even if they’re a little bit more Costco cares WAY more than DT would,” a person said.

“My Costco tires were $200 cheaper than Discount Tire,” another shared.

“As someone who worked for them and my best friend’s family still works for them, they do that to get the sale. It’s not a corporate thing but something that [the] store decided to do. Not all stores will do this but they may lower the tire price instead,” a commenter alleged.
