A new recall from Ford Motor Co. is affecting hundreds of thousands of pickups and SUVs over concerns about potential damage to the vehicles' parking system, and it could be months before a remedy is available.The recall affects certain 2018-2021 Lincoln Navigator and Ford Expedition SUVs, 2020-2021 Explorer and Lincoln Aviators and 2021 F-150 pickups. The transmission park pawl may engage while the vehicle is in motion, resulting in park system damage. In that event, the transmission park feature may not be able to hold the vehicle in park, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.The front end of the 2021 Ford F-150 gets minor updates like a more ovoid grille and lower air shutters for better fuel economy.Ford is aware of 24 allegations of property damage and nine alleged injuries (two of which are allegations of "emotional injuries") related to this issue, according to a document under the recall.AdvertisementAdvertisementDealers will update the powertrain control module software as a part of the recall to prevent the transmission from commanding shifts that could result in temporary engagement of the transmission parking pawl while the vehicle is motion. They also will inspect and replace any damaged transmission components as necessary without charge.Letters notifying owners of the safety risk are expected to be mailed on Aug. 3. Additional letters will be sent once the remedy is available, which is anticipated in April 2027.The recall comes after the Dearborn automaker last week celebrated notching a first-place ranking among mass-market brands in JD Power's Initial Quality Study that looks at issues on new vehicles sold in the first 90 days of ownership.Warranty costs and recalls have weighed on the balance sheet at Ford for years. Last year, it issued more recalls than any other automaker in a single year.
