Czinger Could Go Hunting for Nürburgring RecordsCzinger VehiclesNo Monterey Car Week would truly be complete these days without a serious debut from one of California's own bespoke automakers. This year was no different, with Czinger Vehicles pulling the cover off its brand-new 21C Spyder model. And while the inline-two-seater is a truly spectacular example of a hypercar, it was the comments made by founder and CEO Lukas Czinger during a chat about the car that really got our blood pumping. Because it appears Czinger is gearing up to embark on a track record tour, including a potential stop at the Nürburgring Nordschleife.Like the closed-roof 21C before it, Czinger's latest Spyder model is a serious performance machine. At the heart of the project sits a bespoke carbon tub made exclusively for the Spyder, which brings the added structure an open-top car needs with all that performance on offer. The Spyder is powered by a familiar twin-turbocharged 2.9-liter V-8 paired with three electric motors, producing a combined output of 1250 horsepower. Perhaps even more impressive is the car's ability to generate 3267 pounds of downforce at 150 miles per hour without its removable roof panel in place. No other open-top road car has ever come close to matching that sort of aero enhancement.Such a feat led Road & Track to question whether or not the automaker is interested in hunting open-top lap records. The mad men behind the project did not disappoint.Sam Rojas"We could set some open-top records, but I think we could take some all-out records as well," Lukas Czinger told R&T. "Just, production car records. I think it would be really neat to do that. Of course, we're thinking about safety a little bit, right? This is a fully crash-tested vehicle. We did the rollover testing as well. Probably take another second just to make sure that it's the right car to go for the kind of gnarly and more risky record attempts as well. But yeah, it's definitely got it—it's got the potential to do so."AdvertisementAdvertisementThe 21C is no stranger to capturing track records. The hard-top model is currently the record holder at both Laguna Seca and Circuit of the Americas, which is fairly impressive for an outfit of this scale. When pressed about which tracks have the team the most interested, Czinger noted that there are still quite a few in the States that they are open to pursuing, including Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Silverstone was also mentioned, with Czinger specifically noting that a high-speed track with tight and narrow sections is what the car loves. But there's another beloved track in Europe that the team thinks they have a proper shot at as well: the Green Hell.Sam Rojas"I think, obviously, Nüburgring in Germany—we picked up some data there," said Czinger. "Those were just open days, so there are other cars on the track as well. But we were able to run a couple fast sections and look at our sims and say, 'Hey, if we extrapolated that to [a] full lap, how are we doing?' And the short answer is ... we've definitely got a chance, and we'd like to take it. So it's a matter of time."Don't expect the imminent arrival of a Czinger press release acknowledging these record attempts quite yet. Czinger told R&T that it could be as long as a year before anything truly takes place (which conveniently lines up with next year's Monterey festivities). Setting a new record at the 'Ring isn't just about turning up with the right equipment, either. Record-setting cars from major OEMs typically wear extreme rubber, often from Michelin or Pirelli, that stretch the limits of road legality and off-the-shelf availability. Czinger may not have access to those options. Furthermore, the driver needs to not only be familiar with the 'Ring itself, but also must be comfortable finding pace without slicks. Automakers aren't too keen on sharing this talent with others once they've found them.AdvertisementAdvertisementThat's all to say that while the 21C has plenty to give on paper, we can't wait to see how this goal helps the brand mature even further. You Might Also LikeIf You Can Only Own One Car, Make It One of TheseThese Are the Most Popular Cars by State
