Come Si Dice 'Dafuq'?Studio CastelliCongratulations, you cannot unsee this image! It's now seared into your hippocampus, as it is in mine. For a decade I've stored this photograph in a folder on my laptop, ready to be deployed via email or text when I just want to say "weird" to someone. In case you're curious, your new memory is of the Kar-a-Sutra, a corrugated concept car by Italian architect and product designer Mario Bellini. It was created in 1971 and shown at New York's Museum of Modern Art in '72 as a riposte to the "tyranny of the car." Uh, okay. This story originally appeared in Volume 35 of Road & Track.Hearst OwnedSlathered with a shade of green rarely seen outside the Seventies, this terrarium on wheels allowed occupants to move its sizable square green cushions into various configurations and use the large, flat floor as they wished. One such use was to "make love in a manner not conditioned by the automobile." Another was to carry a horse or a piano should you pick one up on your drive. Bellini provided sketches to show the myriad uses. But what puts this all over the top is the photo shoot in which the nonfunctional Kar-a-Sutra was towed into a freshly harvested cornfield and descended on by cavorting mimes. Take that, you stifling conformists of the automobile system!Photo credit: Studio CastelliKar-a-SutraPhoto credit: Studio CastelliKar-a-SutraPhoto credit: Studio CastelliAdvertisementAdvertisementKar-a-SutraPhoto credit: Studio CastelliKar-a-SutraPhoto credit: Studio CastelliKar-a-SutraPhoto credit: Studio CastelliKar-a-SutraPhoto credit: Studio CastelliAdvertisementAdvertisementKar-a-SutraPhoto credit: Studio CastelliKar-a-SutraPhoto credit: Studio CastelliKar-a-SutraPhoto credit: Studio CastelliKar-a-SutraPhoto credit: Studio CastelliAdvertisementAdvertisementKar-a-Sutra A car-lover's community for ultimate access & unrivaled experiences.JOIN NOW Hearst OwnedYou Might Also LikeIf You Can Only Own One Car, Make It One of TheseThese Are the Most Popular Cars by State
