After a brief stretch of exclusivity in the Chinese market, it is now rolling out LiDAR units on export models. The Tiggo 8 Pro Max and Lepas L6 were recently spotted testing in China, each equipped with a roof-mounted LiDAR unit. The automaker’s global LiDAR push was previously highlighted by Chinese spy shots of the export-exclusive Jaecoo J5, speculated to feature Chery’s “Falcon 700” assisted-driving system. This China-only option is now being rolled out to the firm’s other export models. Chery boasts that “Falcon 700” is derived from its “robotaxi” programs. It has a 27-sensor suite: 11 cameras, 12 ultrasonic radars, 3 mmWave radars, and a roof-mounted solid-state LiDAR unit. The system is capable of end-to-end “Navigate-on-Autopilot” (NOA) and valet parking functions. What’s new with the Tiggo 8 Pro Max The mid-size SUV is also known as the Tiggo 8 Pro or simply the Tiggo 8. In China, it is sold as the Tiggo 8 Plus. The spy shots show it in a global plug-in hybrid (PHEV) trim. This is evident in the export-exclusive headlights and the dual-fuel doors on both sides at the rear. The main change is a roof-mounted solid-state LiDAR atop the windshield, similar to the “Falcon 700”-equipped Chery models in China. The front of the new Tiggo 8 Pro Max. What’s new with the Lepas L6 Lepas is one of Chery’s latest export-exclusive sub-brands. Its name combines “leap” and “passion.” The L6 is closely related to the Jaecoo J7. Its Chinese sibling, the Fulwin T7, is gearing up for a domestic launch soon. The new Lepas L6, next to a LiDAR-equipped Jaecoo J5. Spy shots show the mid-size SUV wearing heavy camouflage, hinting at new styling changes for the L6 lineup. What’s clear, though, is the LiDAR unit on top of the L6’s roof. Again, the Lepas L6 is expected to offer the Falcon 700 assisted-driving system. It’s unclear whether this option will be rolled out to other Lepas models. More on Chery & Falcon 700 Chery brands its assisted-driving systems in China under the “Falcon” name, with “Falcon 700” as the top-trim variant. Chinese-market Tiggo 8 Plus models cannot be optioned with LiDAR and are limited to “Falcon 500” systems instead. Chery’s domestic deliveries, July 2025 to June 2026. Source: China EV DataTracker According to China EV DataTracker, Chery delivered 37,686 units domestically in June 2026. The automaker is experiencing consistent year-on-year sales declines, which it is trying to offset with new energy vehicle (NEV) models for Chinese consumers. The new LiDAR-equipped SUVs, though, also reflect Chery’s renewed push in global markets. It remains to be seen whether better “self-driving” tech can attract more foreign buyers to Chery’s cars.
