Image Credit: LeapmotorAnother Chinese automotive manufacturer is heading to North America. Yes, you read that right. Despite President Trump's tariffs on China, another Chinese car is on the way across the world; however, you won't actually see this in the United States. At least, not yet. That is because this car, the Leapmotor B10 extended-range electric SUV, is coming to Mexico. That is also thanks to a little bit of help from Stellantis. Unlike a lot of important things, this hasn't just been rushed over to Mexico with Stellantis and Leapmotor hoping for the best. The electric SUV has been through some vigorous testing to make sure it is as well-suited to the market as possible. Stellantis Mexico put it through a huge array of tests, including calibrating the powertrain to handle the high altitude present throughout Mexico. It is an incredibly impressive undertaking.AdvertisementAdvertisementFor now, Mexico will be as close to the United States as the Leapmotor will get. Tariffs will no doubt prevent its sale in the United States for a while. But it is still a car worth exploring, as surely it is just a matter of time before Chinese cars arrive on US soil. What Exactly Is the Leapmotor B10?The Leapmotor B10 is not an outright EV. It is an extended-range electric vehicle, designed to combine regular combustion power with extra electrical range. Under the hood, it has a 1.5-liter naturally-aspirated engine, but this merely acts as an onboard generator. It is not the main source of power for the Chinese SUV.The engine feeds the electric drive unit, which has an 18.8kWh battery, and the motor produces 215hp. Add in the 50-liter fuel tank, and the B10 can drive for 615 miles. Once the gasoline engine has run out, the electric motor can drive the car for 61 miles before you need to recharge it and refuel the car. That makes its EV-only power perfect for inner-city drives or shorter trips, while the 1.5-liter engine will aid on those longer journeys.Image Credit: LeapmotorLeapmotor says that recharging the battery in the car will take around 19 minutes from 30 to 80 percent. Not as fast as some of the rapid five-minute charging times from some Chinese EVs, but it is still pretty quick for an electric car. At the time of writing, the car was priced at 575,000 pesos in Mexico, which is around $33,000 at the current exchange rate. Over in Europe, the SUV would cost you €32,400 in Germany. This Is How Stellantis Stress-Tested the B10Image Credit: LeapmotorTo make sure the car would survive in Mexico, it went through quite a vigorous testing program. Stellantis Mexico put it through some torturous tests, including ensuring it would work in high-altitude regions of the country. The car was also tested in high-humidity environments, as well as the desert heat, to see how this would affect the engine, battery, and everything in between.AdvertisementAdvertisementFor those who are unsure about the car's reliability in Mexico, Leapmotor is offering a peace-of-mind package. This will include a four-year vehicle warranty, plus an eight-year warranty for the battery pack it uses. The car weighs in at 3,935 lbs, so it isn't light, but it's by no means the heaviest vehicle you can buy right now. Sales are also being handled by Stellantis Mexico to ensure the SUV can reach as many customers as possible. If you want more stories like this, follow Guessing Headlights on Yahoo so you don't miss what's coming next.
