This 7-Seat EV Just Went 581 Miles on One ChargeSkodaA new EV just set the record for longest distance traveled on a single charge by an electric seven-seat SUV. Too bad it's yet another vehicle we don't get in the US.Skoda's new Peaq electric SUV recently ran 936 kilometers—or about 581 miles—on a single charge during a carefully mapped efficiency run from the Czech Republic to the Netherlands.The production-spec Peaq 90 made the trip without recharging and averaged just 9.2 kWh per 100 kilometers, or roughly 5.9 miles per kWh, said Skoda. The attempt was overseen by German testing and certification organization TÜV SÜD.AdvertisementAdvertisementThat result far exceeds what Skoda says owners should expect in normal driving. The seven-seat Peaq 90 has an official WLTP range of up to 647 kilometers, or about 402 miles. The record run eclipsed that by 289 kilometers, or nearly 45 percent.Skoda employees Marek Jež and Jakub Krs thought up the idea for the attempt and performed the actual record drive. The pair deliberately selected an efficiency-friendly route and modified their driving style to maximize range, a practice that was once called "hypermiling."Skoda"The aim was to demonstrate what the technology can achieve when pushed to its limits," Krs said. He acknowledged owners are unlikely to operate the Peaq the same way in everyday driving.The rear-wheel-drive Peaq 90 used for the run was mechanically stock, said Skoda. Its 91-kWh battery has 86 kWh of usable capacity and feeds a rear motor producing about 282 hp. The SUV rode on standard 19-inch wheels with low-rolling-resistance tires.AdvertisementAdvertisementAerodynamics also played a significant role. Despite its size and three-row layout, the Peaq has a claimed drag coefficient of 0.249.The trip began at Skoda headquarters in Mladá Boleslav around midday on August 25. The Peaq traveled through Germany, with stops for driver changes, meals and rest but no charging, before reaching the Netherlands the following morning. The journey concluded later that day in Zandvoort.The Peaq is Skoda's new electric flagship and its largest and roomiest SUV. It also sports several features new to the brand, including flush door handles, a panoramic roof with adjustable shading, and bidirectional charging.And while the 581-mile run makes for an impressive headline, it's that 402-mile WLTP rating that stands out. Few vehicles in the United States offer as much range, and those that do cost tens of thousands more. A Skoda Peaq 90 starts about the equivalent of $68,000.
