Off-road builder Ineos Automotive is planning to build at least two more models after its delayed Fusilier EREV. These, though, won't be Ineos from the ground up. The company's CEO has said the new 4x4s will be smaller, and they will be created with partners. It's a move that could seriously change the direction of the low-volume British brand. Two New Smaller Models Coming Ineos "We're not building any other cars from the ground up, like we have with the Grenadier," Ineos CEO Lynn Calder told Autocar. She said that there are two more vehicles in the planning phase, but the company will rely on technology partners to do it."We don't plan to change the wheelbase of the Grenadier or do a huge amount more work on the Grenadier platform," Calder told the site. "So you won't see a short-wheelbase Grenadier, but you will see a smaller 4x4."Once the company has its technology sharing partner set up, it will be able to bring its new vehicles to market more quickly, Calder said. She did not confirm or hint at what partners Ineos has approached, but Ineos has already worked with two established automakers that could potentially help. One is Chinese brand Chery. Autocar reported last year that Ineos and Chery had talks regarding using the latter's extended-range EV platform from Chery's 4x4 brand iCar for the upcoming Fusilier.Ineos has already worked with BMW, which supplies the engine and transmission for the Grenadier. That pairing is visible inside every Ineos model, via the BMW-sourced gear selector looking high-tech in the center console surrounded by old-school-style switchgear.Building on an existing chassis could be a tougher obstacle for Ineos than a fallen tree on the trail. The brand focuses on durability and toughness, and though another automakers underpinnings could get it to production faster and more affordably, it could be seen as a sacrifice of those two key attributes. Ineos Looking At US Production IneosThe Fusilier EREV is set to arrive "probably by 2028," Calder said. The plug-in model will help the brand meet stiff regulatory requirements for low-emissions models in Europe, "but without the inconvenience to our customers," Calder said.Calder sounded confident in the brand's future. She said that orders were up 20% in Q1, and described it as having the right car in the right markets now. The company has delivered 35,000 vehicles globally since 2022.The strongest market for Ineos Automotive has been the US despite higher tariffs on vehicles imported into the country and the tariffs on the Quartermaster for being a pickup. 65% of sales of the Grenadier SUV and Quartermaster pickup have been in the US. To help grow that and reduce costs, Calder said the company is looking to start production in the US before the end of 2030.Ineos Automotive, which was founded by Ineos chemicals billionaire Jim Ratcliffe, was created to act as a spiritual replacement to the original Land Rover Defender models. It delivers a body-on-frame 4x4 with a transfer case and physical switches and dials. But it also offers a level of luxury appointments and options that the original could never match.
