Given that it's been spied so many times already, along with the more recent Nürburging shakedown, you can bet that it won't be long before we see the all-new SUV without any camouflage. Now, BMW has released 'official' spy shots of the vehicle, mentioning that its development is now in its final phases. Not only that, but the company has also dropped a couple of key details about the 2027 model that's well worth noting. This release of information is just in time, too, as Audi just pulled the covers off the third-generation Q7 - the X5's direct competitor.BMWThe Combustion-Powered LineupFive powertrains will be available for the X5: gas, diesel, plug-in hybrid, electric, and hydrogen. Based on the previous leak, we already know that there will be a 40 xDrive model. Now that there's more information to work with, we can tell you the power output of that model.AdvertisementAdvertisementWe won't keep you waiting much longer; it's 400 hp, though exact torque figures haven't been released yet. That's a jump of 25 hp over the xDrive40i, which currently makes 375 hp. As before, the new X5 will pack a mild-hybrid system that has likely been upgraded.BMW also mentioned the availability of diesel engines, but no specifics were mentioned yet. It'll likely still be the 3.0-liter mill carried over from the outgoing model, but again with updates and upgrades. We might also see more power extracted from it, though it will likely not be sold in the U.S. It will also have a mild hybrid system.BMWPlug-in Hybrid BoostUnsurprisingly, the plug-in hybrid will return for this generation. It'll now be badged as the 50e xDrive, but the principle remains the same. For now, battery capacity has not been specified, but we can expect a longer EV-only range from the current model. For reference, the xDrive50e can run up to 38 miles on battery power alone, according to EPA ratings.Another thing to expect is faster charging times to reduce downtime and incentivize future owners to actually plug in their plug-in hybrids. As for power, that's been retained, although not totally a bad thing. It still produces 483 hp, though it might rely more on the electric motor to achieve that figure.BMWThe iX5 and Other HighlightsOkay, by that we mean M60i power levels. The X5 M still produces 617 hp, but the iX5 60 xDrive still has an impressive base power rating of 570 hp. That's far ahead of the aforementioned M60i that currently makes 523 hp. Given an EV's inherently rapid response, we can expect this one to just leap off the line.AdvertisementAdvertisementAnother highlight here is the battery capacity. For the U.S. market, it's a whopping 144kWh, the largest BMW has ever used in any of its vehicles. Given its size and BMW's current battery tech, we might see this one go beyond 500 miles, or even 600 miles on a single charge, provided one is blessed with a gentle right foot. As for the hydrogen-powered model, it probably won't be widely sold, though it shows that BMW still isn't giving up on that technology.Other things worth noting? We noticed the distinct lack of door handles on the cars. Instead, we see Mustang Mach-E-esque door pulls that are pretty much guaranteed to be banned in China. It also appears that BMW is committed to ditching the split tailgate in this generation, backing up a previous report from dealers who have already seen the 2027 X5 unmasked. Of course, we'll find out more once it's been fully revealed, and the wait won't be that long anymore.BMWView the 5 images of this gallery on the original articleThis story was originally published by Autoblog on Jun 16, 2026, where it first appeared in the News section.
