When it comes time to buy a new car, most folks are interested in getting something that suits their lives in the most practical way possible. For over 40 percent of Americans, the SUV is their choice, as the segment is the most popular in the States. They come in numerous sizes, ranging from subcompact crossovers to full-size SUVs like the Chevrolet Suburban. In short, it's pretty much a guarantee that there's an SUV out there that could suit your needs perfectly.Along with having loads of sizes to choose from, there are also a lot of different subtypes of SUVs found within those many segments. Take the 2019 Jaguar F-Pace SVR, for example. At its core, it's simply a compact luxury crossover SUV. However, hidden under its hood is a 550-horsepower, supercharged V8. Its current average used price is quite low, low enough to throw it into contention with a brand-new Hyundai Kona Limited Turbo AWD, the top-spec model.Of course, there are quite a few differences between the two. But, when it comes to a straight bang-for-your-buck comparison, which would you choose; the new Hyundai, or the growling, 550-hp cat? We know which we'd like more. Nearly Three Times The Power JaguarGearhead or not, the prospect of 550 hp is an exciting one, and that's the 2019 F-Pace SVR's pièce de résistance.Of course, it all starts with the engine: a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 in this case. The mill itself belongs to Jaguar's now-discontinued AJ engine family, and carries the specific engine code name of "AJ133S". It's the supercharged version of the normal AJ133, and it makes use of several key upgrades to help it produce those 550 ponies. For starters, it employs an Eaton TVS1900R supercharger, alongside a pair of air-to-water intercoolers. A front-mounted heat exchanger is also part of the mix.Jaguar Alongside the supercharger, the AJ133S also contains a slightly different top end. Its pistons, normally dished in the naturally aspirated AJ133, are flat-topped. Its compression ratio was also lowered from 11.5:1 to 9.5:1 to compensate for the addition of forced induction. Each piston is also provided with its own, dedicated oil squirter for better lubrication under high demand. Its camshaft profile also does without Jaguar's Camshaft Profile Switching (CPS) tech due to its supercharger use.Cars & Bids The job of handling all the AJ133S' power is assigned to an eight-speed automatic transmission built by ZF. As standard, the F-Pace SVR comes out of the gate sporting Jaguar AWD with Intelligent Driveline Dynamics (IDD). The setup is able to read the road surface and make predictive adjustments based on the data it gathers through each individual wheel. It's also a rear-axle-biased system, but can send up to 50 percent of the model's power to the front wheels if needed. The system was specially calibrated for the SVR to work in tandem with its Rear Electronic Active Differential, which is specifically set up to handle hard cornering.Oh, the 2026 Hyundai Kona Turbo Premium Plus AWD? That's got a whole 190 hp, quite a lot less than the Jag. Here's How Much It Costs And What It Offers JaguarWhen the 2019 F-Pace SVR first hit showroom floors, Jaguar attached a sticker price of $79,990, and that was before any destination fees or other taxes were factored in. However, these days, Kelley Blue Book reports its current average used price to be right around $33,070. Now, our model of comparison in the pricing department, the 2026 Hyundai Kona Limited Turbo AWD, sports a base MSRP of $34,035 before any fees or taxes. Keep in mind, the Jag is just seven years old, and has nearly three times the power. Features JaguarInside the 2019 F-Pace SVR, Jaguar went about blending performance-oriented touches with a good chunk of familiar, modern English luxury. For starters, its seats are trimmed in perforated Windsor leather and boast both heating and cooling up front. The steering wheel and second-row seats are also heated. Dual-zone climate control comes standard, with quad-zone offered as an optional upgrade. Other luxurious kit, such as a panoramic moonroof, is standard, too.Jaguar As far as tech goes, a standard 10-inch touchscreen sits center stage, which takes control of Jaguar's InTouch Control infotainment software. A larger, 12.3-inch touchscreen is available as an option. Meridian takes care of the F-Pace SVR's sound system and an even more powerful 825-watt sound system, also courtesy of Meridian, is offered as an upgrade. Adaptive cruise control, automatic parking, and a head-up display (HUD) are optional upgrades, as well.JaguarOn the outside, the 2019 F-Pace SVR sets itself apart from the rest of the trim lineup with a slew of go-faster flair. Most of the usual chrome is replaced by piano black trim, and a pair of functional side vents, also in black, are seen along its flanks. An all-new body kit sculpted by SVR is also present, along with a wider front grille for better cooling. As standard, its wheels are 21-inches in diameter, with a 22-inch set sitting as the optional upgrade. So, Kona Or Jag? 2019 jaguar f-pace svr full_frontalWe realize that comparing a Hyundai Kona to a purpose-built, performance SUV is a little bit wacky. However, when you look at what your money buys you between the two, it's hard to ignore the sheer level of bang-for-your-buck the Jag manages to offer over the little Hyundai. After all, it's hard to scoff at 550 hp, heated and cooled, Windsor leather-trimmed seats, and, let's face it, a design that's much more attractive. While the Hyundai Kona has managed to win numerous awards, like the Kelley Blue Book Subcompact SUV Best Buy of 2025, and positions itself as one of the more value-packed SUVs on the market, the Jag offers more virtually any way you slice it.
