Co-written by Kyle Patrick 2026 gmc acadia at4 vs 2026 ford explorer tremor comparison Recently, we held a mega-comparison featuring five ruggedized mid-SUVs. Despite the pricing and function of these SUVs all intersecting to some degree, two were outliers within the quintet. The 2026 GMC Acadia AT4 and 2026 Ford Explorer Tremor were the only three-row entrants, both measuring a size larger than the other three contestants. To see how these two dirt-ready family haulers compare head-to-head, we've gathered them once more for a more direct comparison. As the evaluating went on, a clean winner emerged, but both have their pluses and minuses. Read on to see our findings. 2026 GMC Acadia AT4: All the Details 2026 GMC Acadia AT4: All the Details View Gallery 30 photos Credit: Kyle Patrick A big family SUV that can handle off-roading may seem like an odd combination, but it works. Plus, besides making the Acadia more capable, we'd wager the AT4 package is the best looking version of this SUV, even more so than the Denali. The blocky all-terrain tires, front skid plate, exposed tow hooks, and AT4 badges give it a tougher look. But it still seems a bit ordinary and pedestrian compared to the Explorer Tremor. The Acadia is the bigger and heavier vehicle here but is also more powerful. Under the hood is a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder making 328 hp and 326 lb-ft of torque. It's hooked up to a 10-speed automatic transmission and Active Torque Control AWD system, which is only available on the AT4. The power to weight ratio between the two vehicles is close, so it's no surprise acceleration tests were just as close. That stated, the transmission in the GMC is a bit slower to kickdown, unleashing all that power, which is found in the higher rpm range. Engine and Sound 2WD 2026 gmc acadia at4 vs 2026 ford explorer tremor comparison The engine in the Acadia AT4 is much quieter than it was when we drove its sibling, the Chevrolet Traverse Z71 a few years ago. It's still a wee bit growly at times, but nothing too bothersome. The engine notes we do hear inside aren't nearly as pleasant as the simulated roar in the Explorer. On the plus side for the Acadia, despite more curb weight, more power, and a slightly larger engine, it still manages to achieve slightly better fuel economy figures. Unlike the Ford, the GMC can be manually set to only drive two wheels, the front two in this case. With the press of a button, it flips into all-wheel drive mode, which splits power front to rear at different ratios depending on road conditions and which drive mode is selected. Even when the all-wheel drive mode is engaged, it's still quite easy to spin the front wheels of the Acadia AT4 under hard acceleration when cornering. Big SUV, Big Feel 2026 gmc acadia at4 vs 2026 ford explorer tremor comparison On the road, the Acadia drives as large as it is. There's a massive hood to look over, and everything feels heavy. The steering effort, the transmissions deliberate gear changes, the suspension responses…it all feels like it's going a fraction slower than in reality. The Explorer Tremor isn't exactly a sports car but compared to the Acadia it definitely has the better reflexes and responds quicker to a driver's inputs. Off-road the same theme continues. The Acadia AT4 had no problem conquering any of our off-road challenges, but we felt like it required more effort in doing so compared to the Tremor. The Explorer just blasts across obstacles while the Acadia requires a bit more steering effort, more throttle application, and a little more modulation in crawling over the taller logs and rocks. Better Isolation 2026 gmc acadia at4 vs 2026 ford explorer tremor comparison On the plus side, the interior seems quieter to our ears, and it has the better ride comfort. The driver's seat can be adjusted multiple ways offering decent comfort. There's enough headroom to wear a helmet, in case you want to take this to the local track day? The middle row offers the same generous amount of space and comfort with nice big door openings. The third row in the Acadia has the seat cushion set a bit higher, better for adult passengers. There is a bit less usable legroom, but headroom is fairly equal. The side windows in the Explorer are placed in a better position for third row passengers, but the Ford can only seat two back there while the GMC can take three. 2026 gmc acadia at4 vs 2026 ford explorer tremor comparison The interiors of both vehicles are nice, but neither are standout class leaders. In the GMC, it is a bit busy with numerous different textures, materials, and designs across the dashboard and doors. We really like the Acadia's infotainment software and the dual control climate switches on the bottom. Of course, I need to make a special shoutout to my favorite technology, GM's handsfree Super Cruise. Yes, Ford has BlueCruise, but I still prefer Super Cruise. Ford Explorer Tremor 2026 Ford Explorer Tremor: All the Details 2026 Ford Explorer Tremor: All the Details View Gallery 30 photos Credit: Kyle Patrick 2026 Cadillac escalade V: All the Details For a version of a vehicle that is super familiar on North American roads, the Explorer Tremor still manages to stand out from its lesser siblings thanks to some choice exterior upgrades. Like "Dune", ‘90s Brit Pop, and KFC, It's all about the spice. Or rather "Electric Spice," which is that orangey-yellow hue that Ford uses on the exterior. This includes features like the grille, the tow hooks, the badging, and even one pocket on those unique 18-inch alloy wheels. Don't let the Explorer's ubiquity less than the impact: this is a handsome looking rig. I think the GMC has a slight edge in terms of front-end aggression, but at least this doesn't look like a minivan at the back. Cosier Cabin, Cosier Seats 2026 gmc acadia at4 vs 2026 ford explorer tremor comparison There's no getting around it: the Explorer is the smaller of these two three-rows SUVs, so yes, it is tighter inside. Up front folks are unlikely to notice it, and generally that's true in the second row too. The exception is ingress and egress: the GMC's noticeably taller roofline will make it easier to shuffle into the middle row for taller adults. The third row is where we find the biggest difference: the GMC is wide enough to support three perches, while the Explorer is a duet situation. It's also quite dark back there on account of the big, characteristic reverse-rake C-pillar. On the plus side, the Explorer easily has the better seats. The Tremor's buckets are well-contoured, supportive on long distances, and just generally excellent to spend time in. Ford has nailed it here. Cargo space also goes to the GMC: this and its Buick and Chevy siblings are simply some of the most cavernous SUVs you can buy new. It's not as if the Explorer requires serious planning on anything bar the longest road trips mind you: it still offers up to 85.3 cubic feet of space with the second and third row folded flat. Not only that, the power-folding third row is a helpful touch. Smaller but Mightier Engine 2026 gmc acadia at4 vs 2026 ford explorer tremor comparison Unlike AT4 buyers, Tremor takers have options: the mighty 3.0-liter V6 or the 2.3-liter four-cylinder here. Obviously when compared to the ‘six the four-pot can come off like the lesser option, but don't be fooled. For starters, it punches well above its quoted 300 horsepower and 310 pound-feet. Even with nearly 4,800 pounds to haul around the Explorer is eager and muscular. Hey, if it's good enough for a Mustang, it's good enough for a three-row family hauler, even one with trail conquering aspirations. It also goes without saying that this is the better sounding engine. Normally that wouldn't really factor into a comparison of this class, but again: you're ostensibly buying these for a bit of fun mixed in. 2026 gmc acadia at4 vs 2026 ford explorer tremor comparison Another advantage here is the 10-speed automatic transmission-ironically, a unit co-developed with General Motors. Previous iterations stuck to a gear with all the decisiveness of a puppy in a room full of toys, but last year‘s facelift brought in some much-needed discipline. The result is a smart and snappy gearbox that knows when to hold a ratio and when to shed two or three Official fuel economy is barely worse in the Explorer, losing out in the city by 1 mpg with a rating of 19 mpg (12.1 L/100 km). In practice? Also worse. Agile Explorer 2026 gmc acadia at4 vs 2026 ford explorer tremor comparison Neither of these big boys ever feels smaller than their roughly 200-inch lengths. Nonetheless it is the Ford that provides more smiles behind the wheel. With sweeter steering and better damping, not to mention a surprising amount of grip from those chunky all-terrain tires, the Ford is… actually kind of fun. Credit to the Blue Oval for switching to a rear-biased platform for this generation. Officially this rig is barely lighter than the AT4, but on winding roads en route to our off-road test area it feels at least a few hundred pounds lighter. There is a refinement hit for all that fun, mind you. There's more tire hum and wind noise in the Explorer, as it never approaches the level of isolation the more swanky AT4 does. If you are actually planning on off-roading either of these, the Ford is the clear winner. It has more ground clearance and what we can only assume are better approach and departure angles; GMC doesn't even publish any for the AT4. Another benefit on the trails is a bevy of high-definition camera angles ensuring you're not going to pinstripe that paint. Practical but Unadventerous Cabin 2026 gmc acadia at4 vs 2026 ford explorer tremor comparison Considering the exterior toughness, the Explorer's cabin isn't quite so satisfying. The material use and quality are both so much better now than in the pre-facelift cars, but a bit more color would go a long way. The GMC is just slightly fancier. I do like the Ford's simple center console design, with the dual-level front section making it a cinch to stash sunglass cases or wallets in addition to cell phones. There's plenty of storage throughout the cabin, though the second-row, door-mounted cupholders drew criticism as they limit the size of drinks. 2026 gmc acadia at4 vs 2026 ford explorer tremor comparison Ford's infotainment setup is generally excellent. A large screen is bright and quick to respond, with simple phone pairing. The main menu stays on-screen when using CarPlay too, cutting down on button tapping. Major functions are almost all grouped together in a few main bubbles to most actions take only a poke or two. We also slightly preferred the Explorer's audio system. Both of these SUVs come with their respective brands' hands-free highway driving assists, which are subscription-based models after the initial free period. The highway behaviour is generally pretty great and BlueCruise now features automated lane changes. Both of us still give the nod to Super Cruise however, and it's almost all down to its more intuitive interface with the built-in light bar in the steering wheel. Pricing 2026 gmc acadia at4 vs 2026 ford explorer tremor comparison The Explorer is the better deal in either the USA or Canada. In the former this tester would ring in at $56,945, a roughly two-grand advantage over the GMC. In the latter it's $69,770 CAD as equipped, slicing a zero off the US gap for only the slightest of advantages. The Verdict 2026 gmc acadia at4 vs 2026 ford explorer tremor comparison Overall, the 2026 GMC Acadia AT4 is a well-equipped, family ready vehicle. It also has a lot of the off-road hardware to venture off the beaten path, although it does feature a lower ground clearance. That's a minor footnote though as the Acadia suffers from a few other issues, including price. It's not much pricier than the Explorer, but there is a gap, further giving the overall advantage to the Explorer in this comparison. Top 10 Best New Cars to Modify
