Toyota has recalled a single 2026 Tundra pickup truck after discovering that dealer-installed accessories were not properly reflected on the truck's load-carrying capacity label.Manufacturers rarely recall just one vehicle, but this case shows that even a minor labeling error can trigger a recall. The issue, however, is related to labeling rather than the Tundra's actual weight.According to a recall report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the affected vehicles were identified by reviewing Southeast Toyota Distributors' records for models that received dealer-installed accessories before their first retail sale, where the added accessories exceeded the federal threshold that requires an updated load-carrying capacity label.AdvertisementAdvertisementFederal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 110 requires manufacturers to update a vehicle's load-carrying capacity label when accessories added after final certification exceed the allowable threshold. According to the recall report, SET disclosed that accessories had been installed but failed to provide a revised label that accurately reflected the vehicle's additional weight.Source: Toyota Global MediaThe issue came to light after a dealer discovered that an accessory package installed on the truck was missing from its build sheet. SET investigated and determined that the package had been inadvertently deleted from the records after installation, making this the only affected vehicle. The report states that although the additional weight does not exceed the available payload or passenger-carrying capacity, an inaccurate label could result in a vehicle being overloaded, potentially increasing the risk of a crash. SET said it has not received reports of any incidents caused by the issue.AdvertisementAdvertisementAs part of the recall remedy, SET will notify the affected customer by mail about the noncompliance and will "provide them with a new load carrying capacity modification label to be installed over the original modified label.""The label will be generated specifically for the owner's vehicle, based on the net weight of the accessories installed. The Owner Notification Letter will include a contact number should the owner qualify for a pre-recall remedy reimbursement," the report added. The repair will be carried out at no cost to the owner. To prevent similar issues in the future, SET suspended issuing modified load-carrying capacity labels until its accessory package process and calculations were corrected. The report states:"Modified load carrying capacity labels for vehicles receiving accessories were stopped until the accessory package deletion process was corrected, the calculations were confirmed, and new labels were available."AdvertisementAdvertisementThe report also outlined the recall schedule:"SET will obtain the current owner mailing address data based on the VIN of each individual affected vehicle and will mail the owner notification letter and updated modification label to the owner of the affected vehicle. SET expects the mailing of owner notification letters to begin on or before 09/04/2026."
