A 43-year-old man died when his Tesla Model 3, stopped in a live lane of Interstate 4, was rear-ended by a semi. Florida troopers said they couldn’t explain why the car was stopped in the middle of the highway. Tesla’s own data can explain it, the car’s driver-assist system was engaged, but the company has sealed it. What happened on I-4 Around 9:25 p.m. on October 6, 2025, a 2020 Tesla Model 3 was stopped in the center eastbound lane of I-4 near Lake Mary Boulevard in Seminole County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. A semi bearing down in that lane tried to avoid it, clipped the back of the Tesla, hit a guardrail, and overturned. The Tesla was pushed off the road and into the side of a second semi. The Model 3’s driver, a 43-year-old Deltona man, was pronounced dead at the scene. Both truck drivers were unhurt, and all three were wearing seatbelts, local outlets reported. No news report mentioned Autopilot, “Full Self-Driving,” or any driver-assist system. What Tesla told the federal government Electrek was able to match publicly reported crash to a redacted crash report in Tesla’s own filings to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, under a Standing General Order that requires automakers to report crashes where a Level 2 driver-assist system was engaged within 30 seconds of impact. In that report, Tesla marks the automation “Engagement Status” as “Verified Engaged” — meaning it confirmed through its telematics that Autopilot or “Full Self-Driving” was active. It lists the vehicle’s pre-crash movement as “Stopped” and its speed as 0 mph. And it indicates Tesla holds event-data-recorder and telematics data from the car. Then it redacts what matters: the crash narrative, the software version, and the field for whether the road was within the system’s approved operating area are all blacked out as “confidential business information” — the same redactions Tesla applies to 99.9% of its crash reports. Because the version is hidden, the public file can’t even say whether the system was Autopilot or “Full Self-Driving.” The one question, and the obvious suspect The investigators’ question, why was a car stopped in a live 65-mph lane, is exactly the one Tesla’s sealed data would answer. There is an obvious candidate. Tesla has a long-documented phantom braking problem, in which Autopilot brakes hard for obstacles that aren’t there. It has drawn an NHTSA investigation and a class-action suit, and Electrek has published footage of phantom braking triggering an eight-car pileup. A driver-assist system that brought a car to a stop in a travel lane, or failed to keep it moving, would fit that pattern. So would a driver medical event with the system holding the car. The point is that only Tesla’s data distinguishes between them — and Tesla isn’t sharing. How we know it’s the same crash: NHTSA’s public file leaves a few fields unredacted — city, vehicle, month, and an incident time logged in UTC. Converted to local time, Tesla’s timestamp lands within minutes of FHP’s reported 9:25 p.m., on the same interstate, with the same fatal outcome and the same 2020 Model 3. It’s the same event. Electrek has reached out to FHP to request information about the incident and to ask whether Tesla shared its data with the authorities. Electrek’s Take We don’t know that Tesla’s driver-assist caused this man’s death. But that’s the entire problem: Tesla holds the data that would answer the question – the telematics, the EDR, the reason the car came to a stop- and it has chosen to black it out. It is one of only a few automakers to do that and the only one with massively deployed ADAS resulting in thousands of crashes. The Florida Highway Patrol, investigating a fatal crash, said on the record that it couldn’t explain why the car was stopped. Tesla can. Its own filing says the driver-assist was verified engaged at 0 mph in a live interstate lane, and it is sitting on the record that would show what happened. When a driver-assist system is confirmed engaged in a fatal crash, how the car behaved is not a trade secret, it is a matter of public safety, and it belongs to the public, the investigators, and the family, not to Tesla’s legal department.
