Owners look for reliability, the latest technology, great service at the dealership, and an experience that feels worth the cost. That's where customer satisfaction comes in. Forget horsepower and shiny gadgets for a second – this is about how owners really feel after living with their cars day in and day out.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) Automobile Study 2026 asked thousands of owners across the country how they really feel about their cars. And according to the results, the luxury leaderboard just got a shake-up. Last year's champ has been dethroned, and a familiar face has quietly slipped into the top spot.Mercedes-Benz Leads the Luxury RankingsMercedes-Benz is the big winner this year, grabbing an ACSI score of 81 and claiming the title of America's top-rated luxury automaker for 2026. Its score slipped a bit, but while everyone else stumbled, Mercedes managed to stay ahead of the pack.Audi made a strong improvement, rising four points to 80 and earning second place. The biggest surprise was Lexus. After leading in 2025, Lexus dropped 10 points to 78 and is now tied with Tesla.BMW made a slight comeback, rising one point to 76 after last year's drop. This puts BMW ahead of Acura, Lincoln, Infiniti, and Cadillac, but still behind Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Lexus, and Tesla. Lincoln also scored 76, Acura got 75, and Infiniti followed with 73. Cadillac had the biggest drop, falling 15 points to 69.Luxury Brand2025 Score2026 ScoreChangeMercedes-Benz8281-1Audi7780+3Lexus8778-9Tesla8178-3BMW7576+1Lincoln—76NewAcura7875-3Infiniti—73NewCadillac8169-12Source: American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) Automobile Study 2025 and 2026.Here's What Luxury Owners Were Asked AboutJust like the rankings for mainstream brands, the ACSI study isn't based on reviews or dealership awards. They're based entirely on feedback from real owners. For the 2026 study, ACSI gathered 6,699 surveys from owners between July 2025 and June 2026. Instead of just one category, owners rated their cars on every part of the ownership experience.AdvertisementAdvertisementLuxury owners weighed in on everything: comfort, performance, safety, reliability, tech, interior and exterior looks, fuel economy, warranties, resale value, mobile apps, websites, and how well complaints get handled. All those scores, along with other factors not disclosed by ACSI, get rolled into a single number, from 0 to 100, so you can see exactly how each brand stacks up.The major takeaway? Luxury buyers now care less about the brand name and more about how the car fits into their daily lives. Even well-known brands saw their scores fall as owners began expecting more value.Mercedes-BenzThis story was originally published by Autoblog on Sep 17, 2026, where it first appeared in the News section.
