Tesla is changing that rule for situations where getting away quickly matters far more than protecting the charging equipment. The company has introduced a feature called Emergency Drive Away, which allows compatible Teslas to shift into Drive while they're still connected to a Supercharger. Instead of keeping the vehicle locked in place, the system lets the driver deliberately break away.Tesla developed the feature following a fatal shooting at a Supercharger in Idaho earlier this year. The incident put focus on an uncomfortable safety issue: a driver facing an immediate threat could lose valuable time getting out of the vehicle to unplug. The feature is now being distributed through an over-the-air software update. It is currently limited to Superchargers in the United States and requires Tesla software version 2026.38.3.You Can Shift Into Drive While Still Plugged InEmergency Drive Away lets you shift into Drive while still plugged into a Supercharger https://t.co/40GSzyP4lG— Tesla Charging (@TeslaCharging) October 1, 2026Using Emergency Drive Away is deliberately simple. According to Tesla's demonstration on X, the driver shifts into Drive while connected, prompting a warning to appear on the touchscreen.Confirming that warning overrides the normal lockout and allows the car to move. The charging connector is designed to break away as the vehicle leaves, freeing the Tesla without requiring the driver to step outside. This isn't intended as a convenient way to deal with forgetting to unplug. Tesla explicitly warns that activating Emergency Drive Away will damage both the vehicle and Supercharger, while deliberate misuse could result in additional penalties. Not Every Tesla Can Use ItThe feature won't work on Model S and Model X vehicles built before 2021. Other compatible Teslas will need the appropriate software update before the emergency override becomes available.Tesla hasn't announced whether Emergency Drive Away will expand to Superchargers outside the United States. The company also hasn't suggested that the breakaway mechanism eliminates damage, with its demonstration clearly showing part of the connector dropping to the ground. It's A Last-Resort Safety FeatureImage Credit: MargJohnsonVA at Shutterstock.Emergency Drive Away is one of Tesla's more unusual uses of an over-the-air update, yet its purpose is straightforward. In a dangerous situation, replacing a damaged charging connector or repairing a car is secondary to allowing occupants to leave immediately.Ideally, most owners will never have a reason to activate it. If someone does find themselves facing an immediate threat while charging, however, their Tesla no longer has to remain tethered to the Supercharger while they get out and unplug it.If you want more stories like this, follow Guessing Headlights on Yahoo so you don't miss what's coming next.
