Rivian is rolling out a Ghostbusters-themed Halloween software update for all its EVs hero imageRivian announced a collaboration with Sony Pictures to bring a Ghostbusters-themed Halloween software update to all of its vehicles beginning today, October 9, running through November 2.The over-the-air update introduces a dedicated Ghostbusters in-vehicle app that consolidates the seasonal features in one place. A red toggle switch controls the full experience, syncing interior lighting, themed audio, and exterior displays simultaneously, the company said. Trick or Treat Mode triggers a takeover of the driver and rear displays, plays the Ghostbusters theme song, and activates exterior lights and sound effects. The same controls are available through the Rivian mobile app, allowing owners to trigger effects without being inside the vehicle. The update includes six light-and-sound show options — Ecto-1, Proton Pack, Slimer, Ghost Trap, Peter Venkman, or Random — each pairing exterior LED sequences with themed audio. A Motion Mode setting allows the vehicle to react when someone walks past. Owners can also swap their lock sound to themed alternatives, and Rivian's voice assistant takes on an eerie tone for the season, capable of running light shows, reading scavenger hunt clues, and playing sound effects.Other features include a scavenger hunt that hides characters in familiar screens such as Drive Modes, Gear Guard settings, and the Energy app, and a center-screen arcade game called 'Mallow Mash that lets parked drivers pop Mini-Puft marshmallow figures against the clock, the company said.To access the features, vehicles must be updated to software version 2026.36.0 on the R1 or 2026.36.40 on the R2.To promote the update, Rivian worked with actor Bill Murray and film director Gil Kenan — co-writer of Ghostbusters: Afterlife and director and co-writer of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire — on a short advertisement. Production was handled by Bob Industries, Rivian said.Rivian's team also built a physical Ecto-R1, a custom R1S dressed with white 22-inch aero wheels, a red body graphic, the iconic No-Ghost logo on the hood and front doors, and a roof rack fitted with sirens, spotlights, a radar dish, and side tanks that mirror the original 1984 film car. The Ecto-R1 will appear at Rivian retail locations in Laguna Beach, Austin, Venice, Miami Brickell, San Francisco, and New York City's Meatpacking District, as well as at the NYC Village Halloween Parade, the company said.Rivian Chief Software Officer Wassym Ben said in a statement: "Everyone remembers where they were when they saw Ghostbusters for the first time. Bridging that nostalgic magic with our vehicles was such a dream project for the team."Rivian reported third-quarter vehicle deliveries of 19,248 units on October 2, a 46% increase from the same period a year earlier, and reaffirmed its full-year 2026 delivery guidance of 65,000 to 70,000 vehicles.
