A special R1 and Bill Murray are also part of the story.Rivian is bringing the Ghostbusters universe to its EVs for Halloween.All R1 and R2 models will get a software update that adds visual and sound effects inspired by the 1980s classic.The startup also built a full-scale R1S Ecto-1 replica and brought in Bill Murray to tie it all together.Rivian has a bit of history when it comes to fun, Halloween-inspired software updates for its electric cars, but this year, the California startup is really going above and beyond.The company partnered with Sony Pictures to bring the Ghostbusters universe to all R1 and R2 EVs on the road, topping it all off with a full-on R1S Ecto-1 replica and a promo video starring none other than Bill Murray, who starred as Dr. Peter Venkman in the original Ghostbusters movie from 1984.For Rivian owners, the Halloween software update comes with several sound and visual effects that can be activated from inside the car or from the Rivian smartphone app. The Lights & Sounds option pairs custom exterior LED sequences with Ghostbusters-inspired soundscapes. Drivers can choose between Ecto-1, Proton Pack, Slimer, Ghost Trap, Peter Venkman, or Random. In true Halloween spirit, owners can also enable Motion Mode, which lets the vehicle react with sounds and lights when someone walks by.Custom lock sounds are also part of the pack. First-generation R1 owners can swap the stock sound to Ecto-1, while R1 Gen 2 and R2 drivers can choose between Ecto-1, Proton Pack, or Chant.Rivian Ghostbusters Ecto-R1The interior displays also get a Ghostbusters makeover. Opening the Ghostbusters in-vehicle app while parked pulls up a retro command console with a big red toggle switch that controls the whole experience, syncing interior lighting, themed audio, and exterior displays.Flipping the Trick or Treat Mode on takes over the driver and rear displays and starts playing the Ghostbusters theme song. On the main infotainment display, the Scavenger Hunt add-on hides interactive cue cards with hidden characters inside familiar screens like Drive Modes, Gear Guard, and the Energy app. When players discover a Ghost Guard or a Slimer, it triggers a unique animation and audio.While parked, passengers can also play 'Mallow Mash on the center screen, where they pop Mini-Pufts marshmallow men against the clock. The build comes with a roof rack that packs all of the accessories needed to catch fridge-munching baddies: sirens, a radar dish, and the original emergency lights from the movie car, which were sourced and restored for this project.The electric SUV rides on 22-inch wheels with white covers, and there's a No-Ghost logo on the hood and front doors.To get the special sound and visual effects, Rivian owners need to make sure their vehicle software and mobile app are up to date (R2 needs version 2026.36.40, while R1 needs 2026.36.0). When updated, the driver display will ask if you'd like to "hunt some ghosts." Halloween Mode features will be live from October 9 through November 2, 2026.Fans can enjoy the full-scale Rivian Ecto-R1 homage builds at several events across the country.
