"Who you gonna call?"RivianThis year Rivian is calling Bill Murray for its annual Halloween software update.A Ghostbusters-themed takeover is coming to every Rivian EV through an over-the-air software update Friday. Last year and the years before Rivian's Halloween "costumes" tapped into other cultural classics like Back To The Future and Knight Rider. For 2026, the original R1S and R1T EVs and the new smaller R2 SUV will turn into ghost-busting vehicles just like the 1984 film.Halloween Mode gets a "Ghostbusters" Rivian app this year.Who You Gonna Call? There's An App For That. While Ghostbusters is not inherently super scary, Rivian has captured the silly spookiness across its in-vehicle tech, charging stations and Rivian mobile app with plenty of nostalgic 1980s graphics and features.Even charging at Rivian gets a Ghostbusters spooky makeover. The annual Halloween Mode is a dedicated car app this year controlling the driver display and center touchscreen while parked and even stays in the mode while driving (it's a modified version). You can control the interior lighting, Ghostbusters audio and other sound effects and exterior lighting through the Rivian mobile app as well. It's of course a single red toggle to set off the mode. The Ecto-R1The ultimate costume was the R1 electric pickup's transformation into the Ecto-R1 based on the Ecto-1 ghost-hunting vehicle from the film. While not for sale, the Rivianified Ecto-1 was actually built by the special projects team at the EV startup. The original R1T is available without the No-Ghosts logo, spotlights and radar dish starting at just under $80,000. But it does have a 11 cubic-foot frunk for any DIY ghost busting. The Ecto-R1 will be on display at Rivian retail locations in Laguna Beach, California; Austin, Texas; Venice Beach, California, Miami; San Francisco and New York City. It will also make an appearance at the NYC Village Halloween Parade on Halloween. When there's something strange in the neighborhood.Murray Is BackRivian actually called actor Murray (now a 76-year-old presumably retired ghostbuster) to recreate a 1-minute ad spot featuring Murray as Dr. Peter Venkman in an Ecto-R1 on a ghost-hunting mission where the Rivian frunk (front trunk) makes a ghost-trapping cameo. The classic theme song by Ray Parker Jr. also makes it into the ad.Halloween Mode launches Friday and runs through Nov. 2. To access the Ghostbusters app, update to the latest vehicle and mobile software versions. A prompt will pop up asking if you'd like to "hunt some ghosts."
