Pagani’s One-Off Zonda Kunlun Just Resurfaced in Hong KongBackfire NewsEve NowellWed, September 16, 2026 at 3:11 PM UTCAdd us on GooglePagani’s One-Off Zonda Kunlun Just Resurfaced in Hong KongMost hypercars are built to be seen. The Pagani Zonda Kunlun seems to have been built to be talked about. It's a one-off Zonda named for China's Kunlun mountain range, and it has now turned up in Hong Kong. For a car that has spent most of its life out of sight, even a short appearance is enough to get Pagani people excited. The more useful question is how a car like this exists at all, and what owning one actually involves.Built from a Zonda, not from scratchThe Kunlun came out of Pagani's Unico program, the department that takes an existing car and rebuilds it to a customer's specification. Pagani doesn't treat this as a trim-and-paint service. Its own description says the program lets customers update and customize their car without limits, covering both mechanics and aesthetics, and that parts can be replaced up to "the last bolt of the car." The company also says it set up a dedicated division to handle each Unico project's design and execution. PaganiPaganiAdvertisementAdvertisementThat explains why the Zonda keeps coming back years after regular production ended. Pagani isn't building new Zondas in the usual sense. It takes existing chassis and reworks them. The factory has said as much about the Kunlun's sibling, the Zonda Cervino. In its Villa d'Este release, Pagani called the Cervino a complete reimagining of the Zonda based on an existing chassis, with an entirely new body and upgraded suspension including new dampers. The same document describes Unico as a program in which an original chassis serves as the canvas for a full technical and stylistic transformation. PaganiPaganiCustom Zondas aren't a new idea, either. Pagani says its first one-off was a Zonda C12 S 7.0L built in 2000 at a customer's request, fitted with a removable glass roof. It also says the track-only Zonda Monza of 2004 was commissioned by a client who already owned a Zonda S. Customers have been getting Horacio Pagani to build them something unique for about as long as the Zonda has existed. PaganiPaganiThe reversibility clauseUnico has one feature that collectors should pay attention to. When Pagani launched its Officina restoration and personalization division in 2022, it said the rebuild process follows Pagani's quality standards and the update is fully reversible, so the car can be returned to its original specification. A heavily modified car normally loses originality, and originality is what the auction market pays for. A factory-documented, reversible conversion avoids most of that problem. The owner gets a unique car now and keeps the option of restoring the original configuration later. Pagani runs a separate program, Rinascimento, for that kind of work, and positions it as the route for keeping cars as close to original specification as possible. PaganiWhy you rarely see these cars move under their own powerCars like the Kunlun usually travel by truck, and there are practical reasons for that. Zondas sit very low and use V12 drivetrains that don't respond well to stop-and-go city traffic. Every mile added to a unique car also affects its value, so owners have little reason to drive it on a crowded street when a flatbed can take it straight to an event.Servicing has its own restrictions. In December 2025, Pagani issued an official statement warning that certain entities and individuals had unlawfully used the Pagani name to offer or sell new Pagani vehicles. The company said only official Pagani dealers, Pagani S.p.A. and Pagani Automobili America Inc. are authorized to sell Pagani products and provide after-sales service. For an owner of a one-off, that makes the choice of workshop a major decision. A bespoke car maintained outside the factory's network can end up with gaps in its documentation, and collectors and insurers both care about that paperwork. PaganiInsurance itself is specialized. No standard policy covers a car that can't be replaced. Owners typically use agreed-value collector coverage with strict conditions on storage, transport and use. The cautious habits people notice at sightings, like enclosed garages, careful detailing and flatbed transport, are often what those policies require.Hong Kong is a natural place for a car like this to appear. At its Huayra launch in the city, Pagani said Hong Kong has always been very receptive to the brand, with more than 20 Zondas finding homes there. The company unveiled the Huayra there with five Zondas and a Zonda R on display at the Repulse Bay Hotel. The city's collectors have supported the Zonda for a long time, so a Chinese-themed one-off showing up there is not surprising. PaganiThe takeawayThe Kunlun reflects where Pagani now makes a lot of its money. It doesn't need a new Zonda model when it can rebuild existing ones for customers, add factory documentation, and keep the work reversible. For buyers, that makes a factory-rebuilt Zonda easier to justify than an independent conversion, provided the car's service history stays within Pagani's authorized network. For everyone else, the lesson is simple: when a car like this appears, see it while you can.Images Via: 1130.spots on InstagramAdvertisementAdvertisementYour Turn: Which one-off hypercar would you love to see resurface next?
