The compact hatchback EV, which was launched 8 months ago, has replaced its predecessor, the MG4, in the Chinese market. The Urban has achieved over 10,000 monthly sales in seven of nine months, highlighting its success compared to its domestically poorly received older sibling. Alongside the older MG4, the compact hatchback EV is produced at SAIC’s Nanjing manufacturing base. Both models are simultaneously sold overseas as the MG4 and MG4 Urban. However, in China, the older RWD MG4 never sold in large numbers, and the MG4 Urban was simply introduced as the next-generation MG4. The MG4 Urban retails in China for 68,800-102,800 yuan (10,100-15,100 USD). This is a significant price reduction compared to the older MG4, which retailed for 129,800-186,800 yuan (19,100-27,500 USD) in 2022. The MG4 Urban. Building on this momentum, MG also recently announced a new addition to the MG4 family. The lineup is expanded by the MG 4X, a compact pure EV SUV. SAIC claims that the “X” in the SUV’s name represents “infinite possibilities” for young buyers. The MG 4X measures 4,500 mm in length, 1,849 mm in width, and 1,621 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,735 mm. This means the compact SUV is 45 mm longer than its key rival, the current-gen BYD Atto 3, also known as the Yuan Plus in its home market. The MG4 & the MG4 Urban The MG4, once referred to as the MG Mulan, has an obvious focus on sporting prowess, with front McPherson struts and rear five-link suspension as standard chassis options. Base trims get a 125 kW (168 hp) rear motor, while the range-topping X-Power trim brings a dual-motor 315 kW (422 hp) AWD powertrain to the table. These traits have helped the MG4 (and the MG brand) make inroads into European markets, which place more emphasis on driving feel and enjoyment. Its relatively cramped interior space and outdated tech, however, have given Chinese consumers reason to shy away from it. The older MG4. Now usurped by the MG4 Urban in China. Source: Yiche The MG4 Urban, simply known as the new MG4 in China, represents a commuter-friendly evolution of the hatchback. On the outside, the Urban retains the MG4’s overall sporty styling cues and features headlamp and taillight designs reminiscent of the Cyberster. The rear of the MG4 Urban. The Urban’s athletic abilities have been pared back, though. Gone is the independent rear suspension, with it now replaced by a simple rear torsion bar. The RWD & AWD powertrains are nowhere to be seen either, with a 120 kW (161 hp) front motor as the only powertrain option. The interior has been updated to better suit Chinese tastes as well. Lightly coloured surfaces are used to give the cabin an airy feeling, and fancy massaging, ventilated, heated seats are now available, as are 4-way power leg rests. A 15.6-inch 2.5K infotainment screen sits above the centre console, now capable of smart voice commands thanks to the Doubao 3.0 AI model. The interior of the MG4 Urban. The First Liquid-Solid State BEV The MG4 Urban is also notable as the first mass-produced EV with a liquid-solid-state battery. Marketed as the Anxin Edition, MG claims that its battery has unparalleled safety characteristics. The thermal runaway temperature was doubled from 150°C to 300°C, while puncture tests only resulted in partial overheating, without smoke or flames. This top-trim model comes with a 53.9 kWh battery, good for a CLTC range of 530 km. The pack is provided by SAIC-Qingtao, a joint venture between the automaker and Qingtao (Kunshan) Energy Development Group. The firm claims to be the current world leader in commercially produced solid-state batteries, and recently applied to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange for a public listing. More on MG MG’s domestic deliveries up until April 2026. Source: China EV DataTracker According to China EV DataTracker, MG’s domestic performance has been lacklustre prior to the arrival of the MG4 Urban. Since its launch in August 2025, MG’s monthly deliveries have skyrocketed, even reaching over 20,000 units in December 2025. This coincides with the gradual phase-out of NEV subsidies in China. The MG4 Urban’s arrival has reversed MG’s fate in China, from a marginalised and obsolete brand to a rising force. In July 2025, one month before Urban’s launch, the brand only delivered 7,000 units domestically. Two months later, in September 2025, MG experienced an unprecedented 123.6% year-on-year sales growth.
