MG’s semi-solid-state batteries will not be exclusive to EVs, with plans to launch three new plug-in hybrid SUVs equipped with the new battery tech. First up will be the MG ZS PHEV, set to go on sale in 2027. MG plans for PHEVs with semi-solid-state batteries Earlier this year, MG claimed it had become the first automaker globally to mass-produce semi-solid-state batteries. After the new MG4 went on sale in China last year as the industry’s first mass-produced EV with a semi-solid-state battery, MG said it would bring the new battery tech to Europe by the end of 2026, starting with the all-electric MG4 Urban. While the company plans to introduce the new battery tech in additional EVs, including the MG 4X SUV, MG confirmed it will also be used in upcoming plug-in hybrids (PHEVs). The batteries are specifically designed to work in tandem with its PHEV+ system to improve range, performance, and charging speeds, even in extreme temperatures. MG’s new PHEV+ system is available in two forms: a 1.1L turbocharged or 1.5L turbocharged hybrid engine. Meanwhile, a new hybrid transmission with an EV Mode that maximizes fuel and electrical energy efficiency, which MG said achieves “a new benchmark in overall energy utilization.” The intelligent drive system enables the engine to “maintain thermal efficiency above 40% across approximately 90% of driving conditions, while achieving up to 90% electric drive efficiency,” the company said. The company also revealed plans to launch Navigate On Autopilot in late 2027 to support highway driving as part of its updated MG Pilot ADAS system.
