A woman chronicles the aftermath of the multi-car pile-up accident she was just involved in. On the internet, people are blaming a Tesla driver who didn’t hit anyone. What’s going on here? Shelby Willis (@shelby.willisss) posted the video on Oct. 3. It shows the moments after the crash. Presumably, Willis’ vehicle is the second in the four-car pile-up. There are two vehicles parked in front of the crash. In the onscreen caption, Willis explains what happened. “I stop, I hear [a] screech, my car goes ‘boom,’ I’m in the air,” she writes. She continues in the caption. “I literally told someone yesterday that I’ve never been in an accident before…now my car is in someone’s engine.” Viewers Blame the Accident on the Tesla Driver In the comments section of the video, viewers immediately rushed to judgment in assigning blame to the crash. Many suspected that the pristine Tesla in front of the accident site had something to do with what happened. “Whenever I see a car accident, I just know a Tesla is the reason,” wrote one person. “I bet it was all Tesla’s fault,” agreed a second viewer. Others responded to the sentiment in Willis’ caption. “Bye. I told someone I had never been in an accident and then three days later I got rear ended at a red light,” said one viewer. “I learned to shut up after that.” Gallery: Tesla Model 3 2025 Are Tesla Drivers Really That Bad? It’s very possible that the Tesla in the video is a family member or friend picking up one of the accident victims from the scene. There’s no evidence from this six-second clip that the Tesla was involved in the actual crash. So, what is sparking all the resentment in the comments section? Are Tesla drivers discernibly worse than drivers of any other vehicle brand on the road? Actually, there might be something to this internet sentiment. According to an analysis of insurance claims in 2024, Tesla drivers are indeed the worst on the road when it comes to being involved in accidents and other road violations. The second-worst-ranked group of drivers was those who own Dodge Rams. What did the study attribute to Tesla’s place at the top of the list? Increased cell phone usage while driving, visibility issues and the size of cars on U.S. roads, and Full Self-Driving mode usage. Reddit users discussed this study in a thread posted to r/RealTesla nine months ago. “Up here in the province of Quebec, the Tesla Model 3 is obviously what former 3 Series BMW owners now drive,” one person said. “That demographic was basically our equivalent of terrible pickup drivers. So no surprise at all.” “To be fair, the cars have terrible visibility, tiny rear window, small side mirrors, and a glaring screen that feels like solving a sudoku when I’m using it,” said another person. In response, someone else said, “And most of them think [Full Self-Driving] drives better than them.” Motor1 contacted Willis via email for comment. We'll update this if she responds.
