Now that Hyundai has made the leap from bargain-basement brand to offering surprising value with loads of features, it is trying to keep that momentum going. That must be the reason for the latest special version of the Ioniq 9 electric crossover. It will now get a Black Ink version that sits atop the Calligraphy, and it will have Hyundai and its dealers hoping you'll pay more green to get more black. The New Ioniq 9 Flagship: Black Ink 2027 Hyundai Ioniq 9 Calligraphy Black Ink (8)Calligraphy is Hyundai's top-spec trim grade. The Korean automaker only offers the line on its largest models, including the Santa Fe, Palisade, and the Ioniq 9. Hyundai has already one-upped the standard Calligraphy with a Calligraphy Design Ioniq 9, and now it's doing it again.Right now, black is leading the way in automotive trends. Chrome has been passé for so long it might be about to come back into style, so right now it's gloss black that gets all of the attention. Everyone from Toyota to Rolls-Royce is doing it, with cars like the Corolla Nightshade making it the entire package, and models from Rolls-Royce letting you add it to just about everything. To push its new Dark Knight image, the Calligraphy Black Ink comes with a front skid plate and rear bumper garnish that are both black chrome instead of the matte silver finish of the standard Calligraphy model. But wait, there's more. No Squid Games Needed For This Black Ink CarBuzz/ValnetThis new-for-2027 Hyundai also comes with gloss black roof rails, and the window moldings, inner door handles, and the Hyundai logo on the hood are all black. The wheels are also black, which is a Black Ink exclusive, but they are the same design as the turbine wheels on the Calligraphy Design model. You'll find more black in the cabin. Big shock, we know. The changes there include black aluminum trim instead of bright, a black steering wheel, and black leather. This trim will also come with the reclining and foot-rest Relaxation Seats from the front row in the second row for added comfort.CarBuzz/Valnet The driveline hasn't changed. This one gets the 422-horsepower dual-motor AWD system. A 110.3-kWh battery delivers 311 miles of range, and the 350-kW fast-charging and NACS connector allow the EV to go from 10-80% in as little as 24 minutes.Hyundai describes calligraphy as "elevating written characters into expressive, intentional forms of art," and these Calligraphy models are meant to do something similar to its vehicles. Hyundai says the Black Ink name is meant to reinforce that, "symbolizing clarity, strength, and confidence." No, we're not sure how any of that works either. The reveal of the new top-spec trim came with a name, but not a price. This is the first 2027 Ioniq 9 to be announced, but the 2026 Calligraphy Design grade started from $76,490 plus $1,600 in delivery charges. The 2027 model will likely add a few hundred to that, and the US-built 2027 Ioniq 9 should show up at dealers later this year.
