1984 Aston Martin Lagonda BaT AuctionBring a Trailer (Bring a Trailer)The craziest sedan Aston Martin ever made was actually a success for the company. It's a wild-looking machine, inside and out.Famous Lagonda owners include daredevil Evel Knievel. There are pretty cars, there are handsome cars, and then there are cars that are striking. The Lamborghini Miura, on its debut, dropped jaws because it was so beautiful. Marcello Gandini's follow-up, the Countach, was just as effective because its angular styling was so shocking. This Lagonda was Aston Martin's Countach moment. An example of the most striking-looking sedan ever to come out of Aston Martin's corner of merry old England has just turned up over at Bring a Trailer (which, like Car and Driver, is part of Hearst Autos): a 1984 Aston Martin Lagonda. Designed by William Towns in the 1970s, it's a luxury sedan wrapped in the wedgy styling of the period, a time when "cutting edge" was both a figurative and literal term. It looks like it should have rocket thrusters rather than wheels.Bring a Trailer (Bring a Trailer)Lagondas of this era have a bit of a reputation for unreliability, because they were both extremely complex and also British. However, despite the Blade Runner look, these are just cars. A few years back, C/D caught up with Lagonda owner Harjeet S. Kalsi, an electrical engineer who manufactured his own replacement relays for his 1982 model. With these in place instead of the fault-prone mechanical relays, his car has run faithfully for around two decades.AdvertisementAdvertisementUnder that long hood is a 5.3-liter V-8 shared with the Vantage of the time, tuned for a little more torque at the expense of peak power. Output is 263 horsepower and 292 pound-feet of torque, as this is a left-hand-drive U.S.-spec machine. The transmission is a three-speed automatic, sourced from Chrysler.Bring a Trailer (Bring a Trailer)The interior is, perhaps, even more otherworldly than the Lagonda's exterior, combining hand-built materials with soft-touch buttons and an LED instrument cluster made by aircraft specialist Javelina. This example takes things even further with an Eighties-tastic NEC car phone.Bring a Trailer (Bring a Trailer)Despite a protracted development process, the Lagonda was something of a success for Aston-Martin, which claimed it was the fastest sedan in the world in its day. Buyers had to be both well-heeled and daring, and this example's maroon paint is a match for the Lagonda owned by none other than Evel Knievel. You don't have to be quite as brave as history's most famous motorcycle-riding stuntman to own a Lagonda, although this one hasn't been driven much under its current ownership. With robust V-8 power and a smooth ride, these cars are well-mannered cruisers, the kind that turn heads when they roll down the street.AdvertisementAdvertisementStriking? You betcha. But far easier to both drive and live with than Gandini's scissor-doored supercar masterpiece. The auction ends on June 15.You Might Also LikeGift Guide: Best Ride-On Electric Cars for KidsFuture Cars Worth Waiting For: 2025–2029
