Are sedans set to make a comeback in the US? After multiple decades of losing ground to SUVs and even full-sized pickups, there aren't many sedans left on the market in the US. Most of the big domestic brands have long abandoned the segment, with only Cadillac and Dodge keeping the four-door alive and the rest ceding the segment to the likes of Honda, Toyota, Kia, and Hyundai. Now a new report says that it could be about to change. Buick is reportedly looking at a new sedan, something it hasn't sold in the US since 2020. Sedans Could Finally Be Cool Again Buick Last fall, GM Authority reported that General Motors was working on broadening its US lineup with two new passenger cars. Its sources said that one of those two would be the next-generation Cadillac CT5, but at the time, it didn't know what the other one was.Now the site reports that there is a new Buick sedan under evaluation. If Buick's bosses pull the trigger, it would be the first sedan from Buick in the US since the Regal ended production in 2020.Buick The report suggests that the new car will be built on GM's new Alpha 2-2 platform. This would be an update of the Alpha 2 architecture that underpins the current Cadillac CT4 and CT5 models. This would be an update of that platform made for the new CT5, which is expected to arrive in a few years.Cadillac isn't bringing back the CT4 after this model year. That makes the CT5 a tougher sell, as building just one low-volume car on the platform ties up a lot of space and resources. Adding a higher-volume model makes sense. With Buick offering more luxurious (and slightly more expensive) models than Chevrolet, there's more room for the cost of a Cadillac platform. Does Buick Go After Honda Or Acura? Buick We're not sure who, exactly, Buick would target with this sedan. A rear-drive platform hints at a performance sedan, but the CT5 (especially the supercharged Blackwing) already has that covered. A new stick-shift rear-drive Regal targeting Acura's TLX Type S would be an interesting proposition. A modern GNX, anyone? The Buick brand might not quite have the prestige anymore, but it will probably have better styling and will certainly have a better base thanks to the updated rear-drive platform.Buick could also be chasing after the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, though both are more mainstream offerings. BMW and Mercedes-Benz are the realm of Cadillac, so this could end up being an in-betweener that doesn't really find a home. The last-generation Buick Regal already fell into that trap. It was nicer than the Camry and Accord, offered more performance than a Toyota Avalon, but didn't have the luxury badge to go after Acura or Lexus.Buick's last Regal offered a surprisingly broad lineup. There were four-cylinder models most likely to show up in rental car fleets, but also the V6-powered Regal GS with some legit performance. It hardly built any copies of that sleeper version, but it did build and sell the Regal Tour X, a rugged wagon that was Buick's first longroof since 1996. In an interesting quirk of the auto industry's mergers and acquisitions, that platform is now part of Stellantis. At least Buick still knows how to build sedans. It sells several in China, including a new Regal and the Electra L7. This one is still far from confirmed, and we've reached out to GM for a comment. But we suspect there are more than a few people intrigued by the idea of a Buick that isn't an SUV.
