GM Brake Issue Probe Covers 1.16 Million VehiclesChevroletThe National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has opened an Engineering Analysis investigation into General Motors's eBoost brake system, following continued consumer reports of system failures in some of GM's most popular SUVs and pickup trucks, as well as some of its newest electric vehicles.According to the NHTSA filings, federal regulators have been aware of an issue pertaining to the eBoost system since April 2024, coinciding with the beginning of Preliminary Evaluation PE24011. That investigation stemmed around model year 2023 Cadillac Lyriq EVs in which consumers complained of brake failure in their cars, during which the pedal would go hard while accompanied by a "Brake System Failure" message.At the time, GM shared details from its own internal investigations into the system, alleging that the issues stemmed from broken spindles in the braking system. GM's reports claimed that if a spindle were to fracture, the anti-lock brakes, stability control, and traction control would all remain active until the vehicle came to a complete stop. In theory, this would trigger one of three diagnostic trouble codes before alerting the driver and limiting vehicle speed to 43 mph.CadillacThat said, ODI has continued to receive reports from owners of other eBoost-equipped machinery, which regulators say does not line up with General Motors's initial view of the events. These include reports of immediate brake failure or the loss of ABS while in motion. Here's hoping that ODI is able to track down any potentially dangerous bits of hardware so GM can ensure all of these machines are working correctly.
