Now we have some sense of just how "limited" the cheap EV's run will be.GM is on pace to build 35,000 Bolts by the time production wraps up at the company's Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas in the first quarter of next year, a United Auto Workers official told Reuters. According to the official, Dontay Wilson, the plant had previously been on track to make around 150,000 units. (The figures, Reuters notes, are based on daily production at the plant and not targets passed down by GM.) GM didn't comment on the Bolt's production targets when reached by the outlet.The Bolt's short run reflects just how difficult and unpredictable the U.S. EV landscape has become since most federal support was vaporized. GM canceled the aging Bolt in 2023 as it retooled the Orion factory in Michigan to produce large electric pickup trucks like the Chevy Silverado EV. It reversed that decision just a few months later, saying it would develop a new version of the small EV. Charging power jumped from a painfully slow 55 kW to a healthier 150 kW. A new 65-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack boosted range to 262 miles. It landed as one of America's cheapest EVs, at $28,995 before destination fees.But the timing also wasn't great for any new EV. Bolt sales kicked off early this year, after the end of the EV tax credit dampened demand. While GM didn't slash its EV lineup like some of its rivals, it did cut back production of EVs. In September, Bloomberg reported that GM had planned to cut Bolt production to one shift instead of two.Bolt sales haven't exactly taken off. The company sold 4,224 units in the first half of the year.
