gm recalls chevy silverado and gmc sierra for rupturing airbag dangerGeneral Motors has issued a safety recall for 1,559 full-size pickup trucks due to a defect in their roof rail airbag (RRAB) inflators.The recall impacts certain 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 2500/3500 and GMC Sierra 2500/3500 models, as well as select 2016–2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 trucks.According to the recall documents, the left- and right-side roof rail airbag inflator end cap may detach from the inflator body. Additionally, the inflator sidewall itself may rupture. If an airbag inflator breaks apart during deployment, metal fragments could strike occupants - metal fragments from a ruptured airbag have the potential to cause severe injury or even death.gm recalls chevy silverado and gmc sierra for rupturing airbag dangerThe suspect inflators were produced by Joyson Safety Systems in its facility in Hermoso, Mexico. GM says it first became aware of the issue in late July after a customer reported a left-side airbag rupture in a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. An inspection of the Silverado revealed a split inflator sidewall, which caused damage to theheadliner and roof of the vehicle. In documents provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, GM reports that the people in the Silverado, when the airbag ruptured, escaped with ringing in their ears.To address the issue, GM dealers will replace both the left and right roof rail airbag modules free of charge.Official owner notification letters are scheduled to be mailed out on November 9, 2026.
