The beloved brand delivers a darkly dazzling Breakout to some of the bike's most ardent fans. (G'day, mates.)If you buy from a link, we may earn a commission. Learn moreThey do things a bit differently Down Under. That's my first reaction upon learning Harley-Davidson is releasing a blacked-out version of the Breakout exclusively to Australia and New Zealand. The new blacked-out Breakout rolls into Australia and New Zealand, home of the bike's biggest fans, late next month. - Credit: Harley-DavidsonMy second reaction, realizing the bike is that market's most popular cruiser, is, they deserve it.AdvertisementAdvertisementMy third reaction, looking at it, is, I'm jealous.American choppahThe term "chopper" gets thrown around modified rides a lot, perhaps most famously by Butch Coolidge, but it technically refers to a fairly specific type of bike. The matte black makeover is close to comprehensive, save for the classic red lettering on the tank. - Credit: Harley-DavidsonThat would be a custom moto characterized by extended forks, a lengthened frame, big wheels and other qualities, sometimes achieved via cutting and welding (aka "chopping"), that stretch out the appearance.Think Easy Rider, not Pulp Fiction.Toward that end, the Breakout's 34-degree rake, 66.7-inch wheelbase, 21-inch front wheel and 9.4-inch wide rear wheel (shadowed by a bobtail fender) bring it the closest of all stock Harleys to the original overhauled V-twins dating back to the late 1940s.The blacked-out Breakout retains everything riders love about the model, including the nearly 2,000cc V-twin engine. - Credit: Harley-Davidson(The rumbling Milwaukee-Eight 117 Custom power train, a 1,923cc beast putting out 104 horsepower and 126 ft-lbs of torque at 3,000 rpm, certainly doesn't hurt.)AdvertisementAdvertisementThat particular geometry apparently holds a magical sway over Aussies and Kiwis; while the more practical Heritage Softail is America's best-selling Harley cruiser, the decidedly less wieldy Breakout is their favorite. This round, semi-analog gauge helps the bike retain a throwback feel, but rest assured, it also has USB-C charging. - Credit: Harley-Davidson(To be fair, modern Breakouts boast all the standard Harley rider safety enhancements, including ABS, traction control, drag-torque slip control and their cornering counterparts, making the bikes much nimbler than classic choppers.)Now Harley is rewarding those blokes and sheilas by bringing the Breakout to the dark side, a notable pivot from the brighter, chrome-ier looks it has leaned toward of late.Highlights (lowlights?) include a fresh trim treatment across key components, a Black Denim paint scheme and a Blackline-inspired graphics package. At nearly 10 inches wide, the fat rear wheel is one of the most chopper-y things about the Breakout. - Credit: Harley-DavidsonThe resulting aesthetic bears an unmistakable resemblance to the blacked-out, Heritage Softail-derived Deadwood, right down to the classic red-letter logo on the tank.AdvertisementAdvertisementConsidering that bike launched exclusively to the US market just last month, I guess I can't be too jealous after all.Availability and pricingThe blacked-out Harley-Davidson Breakout rolls into Australia and New Zealand dealerships this fall starting at $37,495 AUD, which roughly converts to $26,850 USD.
