General Motors is recalling certain 2025-2026 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vans because a steering gear assembly may contain a retaining nut that wasn't properly tightened during production.According to documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the loose nut can separate from the steering gear while the vehicle is being driven, potentially causing a loss of steering control and increasing the risk of a crash.Drivers may notice warning signs before a failure occurs, including reduced steering precision or a steering wheel that sits off-center while driving straight.GM traced the issue to a malfunctioning sensor at a supplier's manufacturing facility. The faulty sensor allowed some steering gear assemblies with only hand-tightened retaining nuts to pass final inspection.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe automaker's investigation began after a dealer reported finding a loose steering gear nut on a 2025 Chevrolet Express through GM's Speak Up For Safety program on May 28, 2026. An internal investigation launched on June 2 identified nine additional field reports potentially related to the condition. GM says it is not aware of any crashes or injuries associated with the defect. To remedy the problem, dealers will inspect the steering gear assembly and replace it if necessary at no cost to owners.Notification letters are expected to be mailed beginning August 10, 2026. Owners can also check whether their vehicle is affected by entering their VIN on the NHTSA recall website.Become an AutoGuide insider.
