The MG S5 EV is now locally assembled in Malaysia. The electric SUV is the first model from the SAIC brand to be CKD assembled in Malaysia, and it rolled off the line at EPMB’s Plant 2 in Pegoh, Melaka this morning. The ceremony was officiated by Melaka chief minister Datuk Seri Utama Ab Rauf bin Yusoh. “This first line-off of the MG S5 EV CKD represents a significant milestone for MG in Malaysia and reflects our long-term commitment to localisation and strengthening Malaysia’s role in the regional electric vehicle ecosystem,” said Emory Qi, MD of SAIC Motor Malaysia. “With local assembly, we are able to bring our vehicles closer to Malaysian customers while strengthening the country’s automotive supply chain, supporting local vendors, and contributing to the broader EV ecosystem,” he added. Today’s roll-off also marks the opening of order books for the CKD MG S5 EV, and there are some good updates from the CBU version that was launched in May 2025. For one, there’s extra power and torque – with 202 hp and 350 Nm of torque, the CKD S5 has 34 hp and 100 Nm more than before. Power is sent to the rear wheels. Rear multi-link suspension too, by the way. The CKD S5 supports DC charging of up to 150 kW, which will juice the 62 kWh LFP battery (by CATL) from 10% to 80% SoC in around 26 minutes. WLTP range is up, now at 446 km. The battery has an eight-year or 180,000 km warranty, on top of a separate eight-year or 160,000 km warranty for the motor control unit. The vehicle warranty is seven years or 150,000 km. At 4,476 mm long, 1,849 mm wide and 1,621 mm tall, the S5 is 139 mm shorter, 52 mm narrower and 49 mm lower than the Proton eMas 7 and has a 20 mm shorter wheelbase. It’s slightly larger than the BYD Atto 3, though. There’s no frunk, but the 453-litre boot can be expanded to 1,441 litres with the rear seats folded, including the space under the boot floor. The range-topping Lux variant is the only CKD model offered for now (no more Com) and it gets goodies such as leatherette seats, ventilated and powered front seats, and a hands-free power tailgate. Safety is complete, with MG’s ADAS ‘2.5’ pack that includes traffic jam assist and intelligent cruise control. The S5 is five-star rated by both Euro NCAP and ASEAN NCAP. As mentioned, the CKD MG S5 is now open for booking, and the estimated price is RM120,000. Final pricing and full details will be announced in the coming weeks, but we know that there’s an early bird promotion worth up to RM10,000. The package consists of a RM7,000 rebate, a 7kW wallbox charger worth RM2,000 and RM1,000 in charging credits. In October 2025, CBU MG S5 prices were revised downwards by RM8,000 across the board, landing at RM108,548 for the Com, RM118,548 for the Com Long Range and RM128,548 for the Lux Long Range. This means that the CKD’s RRP is a further RM8.5k lower, if the estimated price holds. Recap the CBU S5 here – Lux specs are largely similar. SAIC Motor Malaysia says that production at EPMB’s Pegoh plant, billed as a CKD hub for Chinese brands (currently GWM, Xpeng soon), is expected to be between 120 and 180 units per month, with an estimated annual output of around 1,500 to 2,000 units in 2026. SAIC is planning exports from Melaka to other ASEAN markets and is even considering left-hand-drive markets.
