Introduced for the 1967 model year to take on Ford's hugely popular Mustang, the Chevrolet Camaro had the code name Panther. Legend has it that when it was first introduced to the automotive press there were questions about the Camaro name. What was it. Supposedly some marketing person replied, "A Camaro is a vicious creature that eats Mustangs." It didn't quite eat the Mustang but it was a formidable opponent.
