At the launch event for the Fangchengbao Bao 5 and Bao 8 flash-charging editions held last night, Fangchengbao General Manager Xiong Tianbo confirmed that BYD’s first new energy pickup truck, the Shark, will officially go on sale in China this year and be incorporated into the Fangchengbao product lineup. The move means BYD’s pickup model, originally developed primarily for overseas markets, will formally enter China’s domestic new energy pickup segment. BYD Shark 6 The Shark first made its global debut in Mexico in May 2024 and is built on BYD’s DMO Super Hybrid Off-Road Platform. Over the past two years, the model has gradually entered multiple overseas markets including Australia, Brazil, Mexico and Ecuador. Compared with China, the Shark gained market attention earlier overseas. In Australia in particular, the Shark 6 starts at AUD 57,900 ($37,690). It became the best-selling PHEV in 2025 among private buyers in the local market. BYD Shark 6 launched in Australia In April this year, BYD delivered its 100,000th new energy vehicle in Australia, with the milestone vehicle being a Shark 6 Premium. The current overseas version adopts a plug-in hybrid powertrain consisting of a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine and dual front and rear electric motors, producing more than 430 horsepower combined. The model delivers a total NEDC range of 840 km, around 100 km of pure electric range, and fuel consumption of 7.5 L/100 km under low-battery conditions. In terms of dimensions, the vehicle measures 5,457 mm in length, 1,971 mm in width and 1,925 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,260 mm, placing it firmly in the mid-to-large-size pickup category. BYD had previously refrained from introducing the Shark into China largely because the domestic new energy pickup segment remained relatively small. GWM Cannon Hi4-T However, over the past two years, models such as the GWM Cannon Hi4-T, Radar Horizon and Ford Ranger PHEV have entered the market, signaling growing demand for electrified pickups in China. According to data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), China’s new energy pickup sales reached 18,000 units in the first quarter of this year, up 2% year-on-year. Based on the current pricing range of the Fangchengbao Bao 5 and Bao 8, the locally launched Shark is expected to enter the market above RMB 300,000 ($44,130), with some higher-spec variants potentially approaching RMB 400,000 ($58,840).
