Whoever commissioned this car just one-upped everyone. Like, every person on the planet. Bugatti has just unveiled a one-of-a-kind W16 Mistral it’s calling “La Perle Rare,” an appropriate name when you see exactly what went into creating it. Created through Bugatti’s Sur Mesure personalization program, this “rare gem” is the very last quad-turbocharged W16 car the super-luxury marque will build. The project began in August 2023 at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, where Jascha Straub, Bugatti’s Manager of Sur Mesure and Individualization, met the client who commissioned the bespoke roadster.Bugatti says inspiration came from Bugatti’s own hand-painted “Vagues de Lumière”-finished cars, the handful of cars that sport this special light-reflecting paint. Straub and the design team developed a special pearlescent color in two tones with generous metal flaking, resulting in a car that has visually separate upper and lower sections: a warm, gold-infused tone across the upper surfaces and a refined warm white covering the lower body. Bugatti says the dividing white-and-gold lines required meticulous hand-masking and painting, taking hundreds of hours to complete.Bugatti W16 Mistral ‘La Perle Rare’The diamond-cut alloy wheels were finished in a specially formulated paint blend to mirror the gold-and-white theme, to pull the whole look together.Inside, all visible carbon components were painted white, with the door panels using alternating white and warm gold line work, while machined and polished aluminum trim accents reflect ambient lighting to enhance the overall luminescence. The name “La Perle Rare,” handwritten by Straub, appears throughout the vehicle, including stitched into the central tunnel and engraved on the engine cover. Rembrandt Bugatti’s Dancing Elephant sculpture motif is also incorporated into the gear selector casing and exterior body panels, a nod to the brand’s heritage. Not bad for a final sendoff to Bugatti’s iconic 16-cylinder line.
