But will there be an S 1000 RS?bmw is making an m 1000 rs for 2027BMW Motorrad is preparing to add a new M model for 2027, and we're not talking about the anticipated M 1300 GS. That model's still coming, though we suspect it might not happen until the 2028 model year. No, the new model we're talking about is a 2027 BMW M 1000 RS.Yes, you read that correctly, an M 1000 RS. The proof comes to us via the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the California Air Resources Board, which have both independently certified an M 1000 RS for the 2027 model year.bmw is making an m 1000 rs for 2027In both cases, the RS was certified alongside the M 1000 RR, which means they will be using the same 999cc inline-Four. The CARB certification lists the same emissions data as the 2026 M 1000 RR, which suggests that the 2027 U.S. models will have the same claimed performance figures of 205 hp at 13,000 rpm and 83 lb-ft. at 11,100 rpm. BMW previously announced the M RR is getting a new, third-generation lightweight frame for 2027.bmw is making an m 1000 rs for 2027But what exactly is the M 1000 RS? While the "RS" designation originally stood for "Rennsport," or "motorsport" in German, since the debut of the R 100 RS in 1976, BMW has repurposed the letters to mean "Reise und Sport." That's German for "Travel and Sport," or what we usually refer to as a sport-touring motorcycle. Currently, the sole RS model in BMW's lineup is the R 1300 RS, which uses a 1,300cc Boxer engine, which has a claimed output of 145 hp at 7,750 rpm and 110 lb-ft. at 6,500 rpm.bmw is making an m 1000 rs for 2027AdvertisementAdvertisementFor the M 1000 RS, we should thus expect a sport-touring version of the M 1000 RR. This lines up with the Equivalent Inertia Mass (EIM) data listed in the CARB certification. EIM is a value used during dyno testing to represent a vehicle's weight combined with the rotating inertia of its parts, typically off to the nearest 10 kg (22 pounds). The M 1000 RS is listed with an EIM of 280 kg (617.3 pounds), compared to the RR's EIM of 270 kg (595 pounds). BMW claims a curb weight of 428 pounds for the M 1000 RR, so we can expect the M 1000 RS to weigh up to 22 pounds heavier. The weight difference would make sense for a sport-touring model, which would usually require a stronger subframe to support luggage, and more comfortable passenger accommodations than you'd find on a typical sportbike.bmw is making an m 1000 rs for 2027So far, every BMW M motorcycle has been an upgraded version of an existing model in the lineup. The M 1000 RR, M 1000 R, and M 1000 XR all line up with the S 1000 RR, S 1000 R, and S 1000 XR. And while we have certification data for the M 1000 RS, we haven't seen any signs yet of an S 1000 RS. It's unclear if the M 1000 RS will stand alone, or if an S version will follow in the near future. We expect BMW will officially announce the M 1000 RS in the fall, either in October or in November, if BMW opts to save it for EICMA.Become a Motorcycle.com insider.
