7,000-Mile 2003 BMW Alpina Roadster V8 Sells With No Reserve on Bring a TrailerA 7,000-mile 2003 BMW Alpina Roadster V8 is crossing the block with no reserve on Bring a Trailer, and with six days left the bidding sits at $175,000. The car is number 203 of the 555 Alpina Roadster V8s built, finished in Titanium Silver Metallic over Black Nappa leather, and offered by Newport Beach, California dealer silverarrowcarsltd with a clean Carfax report and a clean California title. The auction ends October 6.That number is worth reading against the market, because the Alpina Roadster V8 has been one of the more volatile modern BMWs to price. What Alpina Did to the Z8The standard Z8 was BMW's Henrik Fisker-penned homage to the 507, with aluminum panels over an aluminum spaceframe and the M5's 4.9-liter V8 making 394 horsepower through a six-speed manual. The Alpina version, built for the 2003 model year after regular Z8 production ended, took a different road. Alpina's 4.8-liter V8 makes 375 horsepower, but it peaks lower in the rev range and delivers more torque, and it is paired only with a five-speed Switch-Tronic automatic. Alpina added staggered 20-inch Ronal wheels, and the car leans toward a long-legged, grand-touring character rather than the standard Z8's sports-car edge. Our look back at the Z8's James Bond moment covers how the standard car earned its fame. This example also carries xenon headlights, heated power-adjustable sport seats, a Harman Kardon sound system, a six-disc CD changer, navigation and a black soft top. What the Hagerty Numbers SayHagerty's Valuation Tools put the 2003 BMW Z8 Alpina at roughly $206,000 in #3 (Good) condition, with the high end of the guide near $221,000. The most recent reading shows the guide down about 8 percent on the quarter, up about 1 percent over the past year and up about 2.5 percent over three years. In other words, the segment has cooled slightly but is hardly collapsing. The condition guide is only half the story, because the real money has gone to low-mileage cars. Hagerty's recent sales record shows a 671-mile Alpina Roadster bringing $409,750 at Mecum in January, a 4,800-mile car selling for $302,500 on Bring a Trailer in February, and a 5,392-mile car hammering at $357,000 at Broad Arrow in August. By contrast, a 30,000-mile car sold for $235,500 on Bring a Trailer last October. Over three years, Hagerty has tracked 140 public auction sales, with a high of $483,000 and a low of $115,500.Against that spread, a 7,000-mile car bidding at $175,000 with six days remaining sits well under the good-condition guide and far below comparable low-mile results. That does not mean it will stay there, since no-reserve auctions tend to gather most of their action in the final hours. But it does make this sale a useful test of how much buyers will pay for single-digit-thousands mileage when the reserve is out of the picture. How It Compares to the Standard Z8Hagerty's 2001 BMW Z8 guide shows about $159,000 for a #3 car, up 0.6 percent over a year but down 8.6 percent over three. Recent Bring a Trailer results for manual Z8s have ranged from $150,150 for a 68,000-mile car in mid-September to $187,500 for a 28,000-mile example in late August, while a Broad Arrow sale of an 8,753-mile car reached $198,800. For buyers who prefer a six-speed and a hotter engine, the regular Z8 remains the driver's choice. For those who want rarity and low miles, the Alpina is the collector's pick.Related Alpina and Z8 CoverageWe have been following the model closely, including a 17,000-mile Alpina Roadster offered earlier, a 5,000-mile Z8 in blue over red, and the story of the rare Alpina Z8 damaged by looters in Santa Monica and later repaired. For a look at where Alpina values are heading more broadly, see our report on the record Alpina sale and mixed signals across the collector market. What to WatchBidders should confirm service records for the variable valve timing units and cam sensors, two known Z8 trouble spots, and read the comment thread, which already has more than 30 entries. Low mileage raises the premium for originality but also increases the importance of deferred maintenance checks after long periods of sitting. Hagerty's guidance is to favor original owners and avoid deferred maintenance, since repairs can be expensive when they do occur.Values cited are from Hagerty Valuation Tools as of this writing and are estimates, not appraisals. Listing details come from the Bring a Trailer auction page; the bid was $175,000 at time of writing and may change.⚡️ Read the full article on Motorious
