In fact, some sources, like CarEdge, find that Toyota models manage to retain an average of 64.9% of their original value after their first five years on the road, beating Subaru and Honda at 61.2% and 60.5%, respectively. On the luxury side of the industry, Lexus leads the industry with 61.6% of its value retained on average. That's all to say, it's not surprising to see a popular model like the Toyota Land Cruiser not just holding its value, but gaining value over the years. The 200 Series Land Cruiser was on sale from 2008 through 2021, having two facelifts for the 2013 and 2016 model years. While the current Land Cruiser, which went on sale for the 2024 model year, is still a rugged body-on-frame SUV with impressive off-road capabilities, the last big-body 200 Series offers more space for occupants. Buyers are spending more than the model's original MSRP on five-year-old examples in average condition today. There are plenty of examples of high-value 200 Series models. Here's why we think they're still worth so much.Used car values fluctuate depending on a variety of factors, including location, mileage, mechanical and cosmetic conditions, the status of its title (whether it's clean or branded), the number of owners on record, and more. A Car That Beat Depreciation Despite the Odds CarBuzzThe 200 Series Land Cruiser's final model year on sale in the U.S. was 2021. Its original MSRP started at $85,515 for the base model, with the Heritage Edition at $87,845, excluding destination charges and options. According to online auction data, sales, and listings over the past year, the average sale price of a 2021 Land Cruiser has reached $106,780. This is an exceptionally rare example of a five-year-old SUV actually increasing in value after having been driven. The highest auction sale in the last year was for a Heritage Edition model, which is usually the case for high-value sales. It had just 302 miles on the odometer, was located in Montana, and was as clean as it was on the showroom floor, which resulted in a final sale price of $161,000 in September 2025.The most recent example of a 2021 Land Cruiser Heritage Edition sold for $128,000 on May 15th, 2026. It was driven 15,000 miles, had no modifications or real signs of wear, and was located in Indiana. Other Heritage Editions sold for around the $100,000 mark earlier this month. Even the Average 200 Series Land Cruiser is Expensive Pre-Facelift (2008–2015) 200 Series Land Cruiser Average Examples ToyotaEven though the 200 Series had two facelifts, the first was fairly inconsequential. For that reason, many enthusiasts split the generation into two eras — the first being 2008–2015. Auctions involving these earlier model years generally result in lower sales prices. The average sales price of a pre-facelift 200 Series is currently $33,385, based on 18 successful auctions since May 17th, 2025. The highest sale was finalized on Jan. 14th, 2026, for $70,800 for a 2014 Land Cruiser with 65,000 miles, but the average pre-facelift 200 Series looks more like this 2011 model year with 131,000 miles in Florida that sold for $30,000. Post-Facelift (2016–2021) 200 Series Land Cruiser Average Examples ToyotaPost-facelift 200 Series, or the later half of the J200 generation as it's known internally, examples sell for far more on average. Sales like the $161,000 Heritage Edition we talked about earlier slightly skew the average, but the truth is that these 2016–2021 Land Cruisers are still worth a lot. Data shows the post-facelift era's average value at $90,587, based on 44 sales since May 27th, 2025.The standard variant/base model is more common and lower-priced, but it still hasn't depreciated much on average. The most recent sale was for a 2021 base model that sold for $85k. It was based in Texas and had been driven 49,000 miles. There aren't many outliers above or below the ~$80,000 to $90,0000 range. Even the lowest sale was for a modified 2016 base model with 212k miles that sold for $35,000 in February 2026. Land Cruisers Hold Value Better Than Most SUVs CarBuzzThere are caveats to trusting auction sales alone to determine the average value of any vehicle. Most owners bring their vehicle to auction only if they know or assume the results will be in their favor. That means there could be (and are) many more examples of the 200 Series Land Cruiser selling for below the average auction result on other platforms in average condition. For example, sources such as Kelley Blue Book list the fair purchase price of a 2021 Heritage Edition at $72,600. No matter where you get your data, it all says that the Land Cruiser holds its value.CarEdge data show that the Land Cruiser, in general, loses only an average of 35% of its value after its first five years on the road. That includes the newest generation, though, which starts at $57,600 and hasn't held its value as confidently as the post-facelift 200 Series. Why Would Buyers Pay So Much for an Old SUV? ToyotaSome high sales are simply the result of collectors who intend to keep the SUV in a garage for a few more years before trying to sell it again. We recognize that some people view these SUVs as investment opportunities, but they're still expensive because of their powertrains, reliability, off-road capability, and more. 200 Series Toyota Land Cruiser Specs and Features ToyotaThe current Land Cruiser, the 300 Series, caught some flak from the press and enthusiasts for its hybrid four-cylinder powertrain. We actually found that system to be more than adequate in terms of output and capability, but there's a chance it might not be as reliable as the 200 Series' V8.V8 engines are as ingrained in American culture as baseball and apple pie, so it makes sense why a V8 Land Cruiser would be more desirable. Its 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque, paired with full-time four-wheel drive and body-on-frame construction, allow the 2021 model to tow up to 8,100 pounds, which is on par with some pickup trucks today. It's also desirable for its interior dimensions. The 300 Series Land Cruiser is only available with two rows of seats, while the 2021 base model had three rows. Although the third row was only suitable for children with its 28.3 inches of legroom, it appeals more to families than the J300 generation does. J200 Toyota Land Cruiser Reliability ToyotaThe 5.7-liter V8 in the 200 Series, otherwise known as the 3UR-FE, is among the most reliable engines Toyota has ever offered. In fact, some owners have reported traveling over 1,000,000 miles with their original engines. The 3UR engine was also found in models like the Tundra pickup truck, Sequoia SUV, and the Lexus LX – an upscale version of the J200 Land Cruiser. The 2008–2021 Land Cruiser used this 5.7-liter engine exclusively, with few customer complaints. Consulting sources such as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Car Complaints reveal that the generation as a whole is largely free of major or recurring customer complaints. Technically, the 2016 model year has four complaints about the transmission shifting roughly, but that's not enough for us to consider it common.Only a couple of recalls are noteworthy, as well. Affecting the 2015, 2018, and 2019 model years are two recalls, both pertaining to potential fuel pump failure. The low-pressure fuel pump inside the fuel tank could fail while driving. The first recall affected 1,830,752 Toyota and Lexus units, and the second affected 1,525,742 units. Off-Road Capability and Aftermarket Modifications ToyotaThe J200's body-on-frame construction and V8 engine are just the beginning of what this off-roader offers. It came with a host of features that make it capable off the pavement. Some highlights include: Rear locking differential Full-time four-wheel drive 4-link rear suspension Kinetic dynamic front suspension system (now reserved for the Lexus GX) Trail turn assist Multi-terrain monitor camera with front, side, or rear views Multi-terrain drive modes Crawl control This generation is also easily modifiable, with plenty of aftermarket brands offering equipment to make it even more capable of off-roading or overlanding. If you're new to off-roading and choose the 200 Series as a starter rig, begin with a good set of all-terrain tires like BFGoodrich K03s or Nitto Ridge Grapplers. Just keep in mind that 33-inch tires or larger require a lift or cutting to prevent them from rubbing. Plenty of other aftermarket companies offer steel skid plates, lift kits, bumpers, and more. Would You Pay Nearly Double the MSRP for a Used SUV? CarBuzzNot all 200 Series Land Cruisers are worth much these days. Most earlier model years are worth about as much as, if not less than, a new Toyota Camry. The final model year, the 2021 Land Cruiser, can somehow be worth more than it was originally sold for. Buyers today are spending over $100,000 on a used SUV that once had an MSRP of under $90k. Sure, it's big, off-road capable, fairly luxurious by Toyota standards, and it looks great, but do you think it's worth more than Toyota wanted in the first place?
