The topic of Land Cruiser vs GX550 is still very relevant in 2026. The Toyota Land Cruiser has been popular among buyers for years and is still a superb choice in this segment. However, the Lexus GX, which shares the same TNGA-F platform with it, is also another choice that we shouldn't forget about.Despite the similarities in their roots, both have areas in which they excel, and it can be overwhelming to compare them in detail. So we are here to walk you through their performance, off-road capabilities and models available to see which one of them is the one to buy in 2026.This is an on-paper comparison of two full-size SUVs.This comparison takes into account manufacturer-supplied specifications as well as test drive experience, where available. What's An "Off-road SUV?" Ready For The Adventure Straight From The Factory 2025 Toyota Land CruiserBefore we get on with the comparison, we first need to understand what an off-road SUV really stands for, and what its target buyers are. As the word itself suggests, the vehicles in this segment must be capable of going to places other vehicles wouldn't even think about under normal circumstances. These vehicles normally come with features focusing explicitly on off-road capabilities. These usually include an all-wheel-drive (AWD) system, locking differentials, higher ground clearance, and higher approach/departure angles, which ensure these vehicles are able to travel on rougher terrains.Apart from the off-road abilities, these vehicles are also as comfortable for daily use as any other SUVs, and provide many premium features to ensure their occupants have a pleasant journey. Some of the iconic models in this segment, such as the Mercedes-Benz G-Class and the Land Rover Defender, have been on the market for over a decade and have earned themselves some impressive reputations. Buyers within this segment normally pick these off-roaders not just because of their pedigree, but also the ability to go anywhere in style and luxury. Powertrain: The Differences Under The Hood 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser Hybrid That Saves You Money The biggest difference between these vehicles to start with is their powertrain, the heart of any vehicle. Toyota has given the Land Cruiser a turbocharged inline four-cylinder hybrid paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, the only available powertrain to the Land Cruiser being sold in the US. This four-cylinder hybrid is hugely popular among other Toyota models, such as the Tacoma, Tundra, and 4Rummer. It has proved to be powerful, reliable, and efficient, all at the same time.Numbers wise, this 2.4L hybrid is able to produce 326 hp and 465 lb-ft and is paired to a full-time four-wheel-drive system with Active Traction Control and a limited-slip center differential to give the Land Cruiser the best possible performance in off-road conditions. The fuel economy also benefits from the hybrid assistance, as the Land Cruiser is able to achieve a combined 23 mpg in EPA ratings. Refinement Over Efficiency The Lexus GX also comes with just one powertrain option in the US. The 3.4L twin-turbocharged V6 provides the GX with 349 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. The V6 is paired with a 10-speed automatic and a full-time 4WD with a limited-slip differential and locking feature. Being a V6, an extra two cylinders over the Toyota, the GX naturally falls short in fuel economy in comparison, with a combined mpg of 17 on EPA ratings. On paper, it may seem the Land Cruiser is a clear winner with similar power figures and better fuel economy. However, the V6 in the GX also offers better running quality and more refinement, so the four-cylinder might feel a little bit cheap in comparison. We would recommend the GX in this context, as it offers a more luxurious feel with superior numbers in almost every aspect. Although the lack of fuel efficiency is worth noting, we doubt this would be the primary concern of buyers in this segment. Capabilities: Where The Numbers Really Matter 2024 Lexus GX Toyota Land Cruiser vs Lexus GX: Which Is The Better Off-roader? We have to mention the off-road figures when speaking about these off-road SUVs. These are the numbers that demonstrate each model's capabilities while differentiating them from other SUVs on the market. In terms of the most relevant off-road figures, the Land Cruiser and GX both have areas in which they excel. The Land Cruiser has the best angle of approach at 32 degrees, whereas the GX only has 26 degrees. Both of them have similar departure angles, and the Overtrail trim of the GX has a slightly better breakover angle at 24 degrees. It's hard to tell which is a clear winner here, but we can be sure they are both excellent off-roaders.But despite the similarity in their off-road figures and the fact they both have locking differentials, the GX does have a trick up its sleeve as the Overtrail model is available with Lexus' Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS). This system is able to detach or reattach the stabilizer bars depending on the driving condition and mode selected. In city driving scenarios, the system can also help reduce body roll and improve ride comfort. Other Numbers That Are Also Important 2023_Lexus_GX_460_2Being an SUV that might be hauling stuff around or carrying people, it's also important for us to take a look at other figures that are related. The GX excels in towing capacity, being able to tow up to 9,096 lbs in the overtrail model, and even the luxury+ model with the least towing capacity is still able to tow 7,601 lbs, which is significantly more than the Land Cruiser's 6,000-pound maximum towing capacity.Despite the fact these two share similar exterior dimensions, when it comes to how the interior space is arranged, they can be drastically different. The GX is a clear winner here in terms of versatility, being the only one that can carry up to seven passengers and offers a third row, it provides more flexibility when carrying people. Cargo space is where these two trade punches. The Land Cruiser has the biggest space behind its second row at 46.2 cu-ft when compared to 40.2 cu-ft in the GX. The two-row configuration GX has the most space with its second row folded down at 90.5 cu-ft, whereas the three-row configuration has only 76.9 cu-ft. which is less than the Land Cruiser's 82.2 cu-ft. That being said, we would still prefer to have the flexibility to carry more passengers than having the extra cargo space. Pricing And Models: Retro vs Luxury 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser Land Cruiser: Retro Vibe Or Fully Loaded Toyota is playing it relatively simple when it comes to the trims offered for the Land Cruiser. There are only two models available, the base Land Cruiser 1958, which offers a retro exterior look and the standard Land Cruiser, which offers all the goodies you would expect from Toyota in this price range. The base 1958 model starts at $57,600 without destination charge, which is significantly less than the MSRP of the standard Land Cruiser starting at $63,675.However, it's worth noting that the standard Land Cruiser is way better equipped in terms of features, such as a bigger gauge cluster and infotainment screen as well as a heated and ventilated seat. Moreover, the standard trim is also the only model to offer the Premium package, which adds more luxury features. In this context, the standard is significantly better in terms of cost benefit. Unless you prefer the retro look of the Land Cruiser 1958, the standard Land Cruiser trim is the one we would recommend. Lexus GX: Luxury To Choose Between Lexus on the other hand, has decided to go a different direction by offering up to six trims in the GX lineup. You have the base-model Premium to start with, and in the middle, you have a more off-road-oriented Overtrail model. Finally, for the full Lexus experience, you have the Luxury trim at the top. The mid-spec Overtrail model seems more appealing to us, considering the fact it's packed with all the off-road features, such as adaptive suspension and the KDSS system mentioned earlier. It offers luxury along with the performance of being an off-road trailblazer. Final Verdict: Which One Comes Out On Top 2025 Toyota Land CruiserIt's very close between these two Japanese off-roaders. Both of them offer superb off-road ability whilst retaining the daily usability of a modern SUV. The Land Cruiser is probably more approachable as it offers a more efficient powertrain and lower maintenance costs, while the Lexus GX will excel in overall quality. However, we would still recommend the Lexus GX as it provides a more complete package in this segment. The Land Cruiser may be a popular option for the mass market as it bears one of the most well-known nameplates in the US. But with a more flexible seating configuration, a more powerful and refined engine along with a higher quality interio, the GX is able to provide its customers with an ownership experience like no other. The CarBuzz Recommendation CarBuzz / ValnetJared Rosenholtz, CarBuzz Editor-At Large, has spent time with both the Lexus GX and the Land Cruiser, and raised the question, "Is the Lexus GX more than a land cruiser with extra cylinders and leather?""The most notable difference between the Land Cruiser and the GX is what engines are found under their respective hoods... Despite having an additional turbo and two more cylinders, [the GX's] V6 isn't significantly more powerful than the [Land Cruiser]. We much prefer the sound of the V6 in the GX, and the four-cylinder in the Land Cruiser feels like it has to work harder to produce the same acceleration."- Jared Rosenholtz, Editor-at-LargeLooking further than just the mechanicals, the Lexus GX is a more premium SUV than the Land Cruiser, with the top Toyota trim coming close to a basic GX for comfort and opulence. In its more expensive grades, the GX is far superior in terms of accouterments and finishings in the cabin - and it has a bit more cargo space in the trunk, to boot. This tracks with Lexus being the premium brand to Toyota - and pricing shows the same thing. You'l pay more for the Lexus, and the trade-off is slightly more refinement and an engine that is a little more pleasant to listen to and use.Source: Toyota, Lexus
