Yes, That's An American Flag Made from 295 CorvettesJosh-Maynard.com295 Corvettes came together on Detroit's Belle Isle to make a giant American flag to celebrate Flag Day and to raise money for veterans' charities.Cloudy skies may have prevented the expected 450-plus Corvettes.Over 250 Corvettes descended upon Detroit's Belle Isle on Flag Day last Sunday to form a giant American flag and raise money for four veterans' charities.Obviously, there was a need for Corvettes in red, white, and blue, and those made up the majority of the flag, but some other colors formed the flag pole on which Old Glory flew. While as many as 450 Vettes were hoped for, a count of the flag showed 295, which is still impressive.Josh-Maynard.comThe event was known as—and T-shirts proclaimed it—"Corvettes on the Island." It was organized by Larry and Verna Courtney of Michigan Corvette Events, a Michigan-based nonprofit that supports food pantries and veterans groups. The Courtneys are well known in Corvette circles for enthusiast-driven events including Corvettes on Woodward, Corvettes on the Island at Belle Isle, and leadership roles in the National Corvette Caravan.AdvertisementAdvertisement"This homegrown Michigan effort is built by the Corvette community itself with owners expected from across the country for an ambitious Flag Day tribute celebrating America 250, and honoring veterans," read a release on the event."My wife and I have been doing veterans' Corvette events for quite a while," Courtney told Fox2 News. "Today, we're raising money for four different veterans' groups that will work out really good. I just felt that because it was the 250th anniversary, and Flag Day, we would do something special."Among the monies raised, Chevrolet made a $20,000 donation benefiting four veteran-serving organizations recognized on site:Operation Homefront, which helps military families with financial assistance and housing stability.Helmets to Hardhats, which connects veterans to skilled trades careers and apprenticeships. The Fallen and Wounded Soldiers Fund, which supports Michigan veterans and military families facing hardship.Wayne County Veterans Court, which helps veterans facing legal challenges access treatment, accountability, and support services.AdvertisementAdvertisement"The idea was to get everybody together in unity," said Courtney. "The idea was to get people together to share their stories and then to do some good.""It turned out to be a great event," said former GM engine designer Rick Davis, himself owner of two Corvettes. "I was concerned the weather was going to keep people away, but they showed up en masse and it really shows the commitment people have for the cause. It's phenomenal.""This is amazing," said Chevrolet spokesperson Lily Fragoso. "Just seeing this beautiful Corvette community come together for such a great event that's for vets, the company has been part of the United States for 115 years, Corvette has been part of that history for 70, and coming here together to celebrate 250 years, and on Flag Day, I think it's just amazing."
