YZR-inspired model gets certified by CARByamaha is finally bringing the xsr900 gp to americaIt took a while, but it looks like Yamaha is finally bringing the XSR900 GP to the U.S., after offering the retro-inspired model in Europe since 2024. The partially-faired version of the XSR900 was inspired by Yamaha Grand Prix machines ridden by racing legends such as Kenny Roberts, Eddie Lawson, and Wayne Rainey.Read More:2024 Yamaha XSR900 GP Announced for EuropeWayne Rainey Rides AgainThat's three American racing legends by the way, which makes it all the more confusing why the XSR900 GP has not been offered in the U.S. market yet. The GP is basically a modified version of the XSR900, which is already part of Yamaha Motor USA's lineup. The main differences between the two are the Grand Prix-inspired half fairing and clip-on handlebars for a more aggressive riding position.yamaha is finally bringing the xsr900 gp to americaWe got an inkling that things may be changing last July, when Yamaha Motor Europe, in collaboration with its U.S. counterpart, presented Rainey with a modified XSR900 GP to ride at Laguna Seca in Monterey, California. That particular bike was equipped with a support to hold Rainey, who is paralyzed from the waist down, in place, had hand controls for the rear brake, and the Yamaha Automated Manual Transmission (Y-AMT) to allow the three-time Grand Prix Champion to control it. At the time, that made the one-off bike not only the only XSR900 GP known to be in the U.S., but also the first Yamaha in the country with Y-AMT.AdvertisementAdvertisementThanks to an executive order issued by the California Air Resources Board, we can now confirm the XSR900 GP has been certified in the state as a 2027 model. We don't have national certification data from the Environmental Protection Agency, but that should come in a matter of time.yamaha is finally bringing the xsr900 gp to americaThe XSR900 GP was listed alongside other U.S.-bound models using Yamaha's 890cc CP3 engine. It joins the regular XSR900, the MT-09, the MT-09 SP, the Tracer 9, and the YZF-R9. The GP model is denoted by the model codes XSR9GPVCW and XSR9GPVCY. In Yamaha-speak, the "V" stands for the 2027 model year, "C" for California models, and the final letter stands for the color. In this case, the "W" likely stands for white, and the "Y" stands for Yellow.yamaha is finally bringing the xsr900 gp to americaThe CARB approval doesn't tell us when Yamaha Motor USA will officially announce the XSR900 GP, but since the model is already available in other markets, we expect it will be in the next month, ahead of any new global model announcements.Become a Motorcycle.com insider.
