Era 9X full-size EREV crossover was launched in China with a price range of 309,800 – 359,800 yuan (45,315 – 52,630 USD). It is a 5.2-meter SUV with a dual-motor AWD for 380 kW (510 hp), air suspension, and an electric range of 406 km under the CLTC cycle. The ID. Era 9X is the largest crossover under the Volkswagen brand, developed jointly by the German brand and the Chinese state-owned SAIC. It is the SAIC-Volkswagen joint venture’s answer to popular NEV models from domestic brands, including the Aito M8 and the Lynk & Co 900. The ID. Era 9X was developed specifically for the domestic market as Volkswagen aims to boost its NEV market share. Volkswagen ID. Era 9X exterior The Volkswagen ID. Era 9X is a full-size crossover finished in the brand’s latest design language. It adopts a closed front end with split headlights, an active air intake, and an illuminated Volkswagen badge. The car has a curved roofline, a LiDAR sensor, retractable door handles, plastic trim around the wheel arches, and a continuous taillight strip at the rear. The new SUV boasts a floating roof design, thanks to blackened pillars. Volkswagen ID. Era 9X Dimensions of the Volkswagen ID. Era 9X are 5207/1997/1810 mm with a wheelbase of 3,070 mm. For clarity, this model stays close to the Mercedes-Benz GLS in terms of body length. The ID. Era 9X’s rear doors have an opening angle of 80 degrees. Brand’s officials highlighted that this SUV adopts 15 aerodynamic elements, resulting in a drag coefficient of 0.253 Cd. The lower this number is, the lower the energy consumption and the less noise during highway rides. The Volkswagen ID. Era 9X with exterior inspired by Star Wars The Volkswagen ID. Era 9X comes standard with six body colors: Desert Gold, Fairy Green, Sky Blue, Distant Mountain Gray, Obsidian Black, and Snow White. Era 9X offers six seats with a 2+2+2 layout. The car’s center console follows the generic design language typical for most full-size NEV crossovers available in China. It has a block of two 15.6-inch screens complemented by a small 8.88-inch LCD instrument cluster and a head-up display. The rear doors adopt 6-inch monitors. A 21.4-inch screen sits in the ceiling. The car’s acoustic system adopts 27 speakers, with four of them sitting in headrests. It supports microphone-free karaoke. Era 9X The front and the second-row seats adopt ventilation and massage functions. Passengers have a built-in fridge with a heating function. The trunk has a capacity of 210 liters with the third-row seats up. This number reaches 1,014 liters with the rear seats folded down. The ID. Era 9X adopts the LiDAR-based assisted driving system powered by the Momenta R7 learning world model. The system supports the full-scenario Navigate On Autopilot (NOA) function and parking. Powertrain and prices The Volkswagen flagship SUV for China adopts the EA211 Evo 1.5-liter turbocharged engine under the hood. It doesn’t send any torque to the wheels, powering electric motors and a battery. Previously, the Chinese brand Li Auto, considered as one of the domestic top-tier EREV makers, called Volkswagen’s range extender “outdated.” The Volkswagen ID. Era 9X has a mixed range of up to 1,651 km Anyway, the ID. Era 9X comes standard with a dual-motor AWD. The entry-level model has a peak power output of 370 kW (496 hp). A more powerful variant generates 380 kW (510 hp). Previously, the RWD version of the ID. Era 9X was exposed in China during the domestic homologation process. However, this variant didn’t make it to the market. The top-trim 9X speeds up to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds. The Volkswagen ID. Era 9X is available for purchase with two battery options for 51.1 kWh and 65.2 kWh. The electric range lies between 347 and 406 km under CLTC conditions. The mixed range of this large family driver reaches 1,611 – 1,651 km. Thanks to an 800V high-voltage system, it can charge from 10% to 80% in 16.5 minutes. The fuel consumption is 6.27 liters per 100 km with a depleted battery. The Volkswagen ID. Era 9X also adopts the dual-chamber air suspension that can adapt to road conditions 15 meters in advance. Thanks to the rear-wheel steering, the ID. Era 9X has a turning radius of 4.85 meters. The Volkswagen ID. Era 9X is available for purchase with three trim levels. So, it seems that Volkswagen is confident with their flagship.
